550598 2007-05-17 05:59:00 Video games . . . not computer games, were the first incarnation of things CRT that used human interface to play some very simple games like Tic-Tac-Toe or PONG .

Take a little trip back to yesteryear and see what and where it all began:

Extra point question . . . .

Who was Mssr . Jacquard and what did he have to do with computers?

550599 2007-05-17 06:43:00 [i]Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to decieve .

Jacquard used punched holes in rolls of cardboard to control automatic looms . I suspect there were other automatic machines , including musical instruments, around using the same method . I suppose you could, as many have, say that this is what computer punched cards are based on . But it's a bit of a stretch, especially since Jacquard didn't have Lycra . And looms didn't have built in computers in those days .

Donald Knuth wrote two computer languages: "Tangle", and "Weave" which he used to develop the Tex typesetting system .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . that anything that can recall a set pattern or line of data or operation is a computer .

The word "computer" is old-world Yiddish®, alleging it's ancient heraldry and by extrapolation, it's use in much earlier civilizations:

"Com" = with or about, esp like COMPOSURE, ie; "Stella showed great composure when she accidentally got brissed!"

"Puter" = device for holding archives or family heirlooms, ie; "Moishe's remains are in the puter vase on the mantel" .

If one were to just take the lineage of words to their root beginnings, then a lot of confusion would be removed . Case closed .
