The imminent demise of the mouse has been pretty regularly predicted by marketing people who have been the only profit takers from some highly original replacement technology. :(

It will be due out sooner than you think. The first example is currently active on the iPhone which is about to be released in the US. I gather the same technology will be following not far behind with laptops.It is known as a proximity sensor.
