553361 2007-05-26 11:53:00 Hi Team

I use 250v polystyrene tuning caps in the range 22pF to 1000pF on a regular basis in my work and find that supplies in NZ seem to be drying up. DSE had a barely adequate range, but they are going right out of components now, and surprisingly, Jaycar don't stock polystyrenes at all.

So, where do electronics professionals go to buy small quantities of these caps? Is there a specialist component supplier out there that I've either forgotten about or haven't heard of, or do I have to look at overseas sites?

Cheers

553363 2007-05-27 01:09:00 Thanks tweak'e, I was hoping to avoid RS or Farnell. They charge like wounded bulls  , though I have to admit their quality is usually good. They also have minimum quantity purchasing as well, and when I repaired an instrument power supply a few months back I had to buy around 60 low esr caps (6 values in 10x packs) but used only 10 or 12 of them. In that instance I had to charge the custormer for the lot as they will be pretty much dead stock now.

Resistor quality isn't all that good now either!

Cheers

553364 2007-05-27 03:45:00 South Island Components (sicom . co . nz) in Christchurch have a wide range of stuff, and their prices are pretty reasonable . However, the Capacitors (www . sicom . co . nz/xurl/function/pgrplist/grpid/6272/capacitors . html) page doesn't have a polystyrene section . There are some NPO caps in the Surface Mount page, which might be usable (if you need NPO) .

What about Tesa, or other service wholesalers?

The TradeTech (www . tradetech . co . nz) site gives no returns for "polystyrene" . :(

If you can find a manufacturere who imports their own components you might be able to work a deal; but the few manufacturers seem to be moving their production to the automated factories overseas .

I suppose the problem is that manufacturers are using SMD devices, and few people are building new equipment (so DSE can't keep stock gathering dust) . I wonder how long Jaycar can continue stocking components .

Parts for service are going to be a worsening problem, until "service" becomes a non-word . Perhaps you will have to get that barista (or call centre operation) qualification after all, Billy . :D

I've managed to get a lot of bandoliered 1/4 watt resistors, and I'm sticking up on Veroboard for my digital construction .

553366 2007-05-27 04:41:00 Polyesters aren't the problem. Yet. ;) But we do often want chips with them. Graham L (2)
