It hadda happen . . . Dell hooked into Wal-mart with a Linux computer for the minimum wage earners .

Well . . . . Find a nitch: Fill it .

To the tech savvy crowd of burger flippers that have been salivating for the retailer to offer machines with an open-source OS, Dell is now foisting 2 desktops and a notebook all set up with the Ubuntu distribution of Linux, with the top-end desktop going for $849 and the other two for $599 each .

No notice was given of what the possible discount prices would be without Linix installed in them .

We DO salivate, don't we?

Initially demand should be strong . . . . . . . given that the idea got 30,000 "YAY" votes in Dell’s suggestion box and the company got an affirmation by 100,000 people on a Linux survey . The "NAY" boxes had the slots only painted on the tops .

And A Free Geek In Every Box . . . . . . . . . . .

The question is will this be Dell's Millennium Edition or Swan Song?

Once the Linux boxes got the green light, it’s the blue light for two low-end Dell desktops .

Departure, as it is from its direct-sales roots, Dell will put the machines on the aisles of Wal-Marts and Sam’s Clubs across the country . . . the US country, that is .

Don't expect to see them in NZ .

Specs on the LinDell boxes are forthcoming, but June 10 appears to be the target (can I say "target" in an article about Wally-World?) and when bundled up, they will sell for under $700US .

This comports with Sam Walton's effort to add high-end electronics and Dell’s entrance to retail outlets worldwide . Well . . "high-end" to MacInTheBox employees anyway .
