| 552465 | 2007-05-23 04:10:00 | It is amazing how our NZ media love to pull successful NZers down. Top story on the Midday news tpday was about the Lion Man being sentenced in court, but the story failed to contain any facts in it, and if you read the facts about the case, you can understand why it happened, and that the judge even sympathized with the Lion Mans circumstances. This type of tabloid journalism (which isn't even newsworthly) is happening too much in NZ, and is the worst type of Tall Poppy Syndrome there is. |

I'd say the Lionman just doesn't have the right (or any?) PR manager. Hell- if we're really lucky he'll make it onto Dancing With The (cough) Stars now that he's had 'exposure'. |

| 552467 | 2007-05-23 04:18:00 | How can a "Lion" be a "Man", let alone a "Poppy", "Tall" or not? We seem to have some life form classification problems here. | Graham L (2) | ||

Hmm, you could say that the majority of NZ 'celebs' were likely to have been spawned by single cell reproduction... calling them a life form may be a stretch. I do feel that the Lion man may have more claim to being 'real' than those things in sequins. |

| 552469 | 2007-05-23 07:30:00 | Your facts need to be correct: Tall poppy syndrome (TPS) is a pejorative term used in Australia and New Zealand to describe what is seen as a levelling social attitude. Someone is said to be suffering from tall poppy syndrome when his or her assumption of a higher economic, social or political position attracts criticism, being perceived as presumptuous, attention seeking or without merit. This was just a report on his assault charges. Whether or not his wife was sleeping or something else is a matter of debate, thats all. He did hurt her. How that has anything to do with tall poppys I don't know. |

| 552471 | 2007-05-23 10:00:00 | Your facts need to be correct: He did hurt her. Apparently he didn't really do anything to her, just a bit of rough handling as he pulled her out of the bed. It must have been a huge shock for him to find his girlfriend doing that sort of thing. The judge did say that he understood what he did and that it was an understandable reaction for the situation. She wasn't even willing to testify in court about it, even though she must have complained to the police about it. The judge had to fine the lion man, because he had pleaded guilty on the charge. The way that TVNZ reported it was disgusting and didn't provide any facts, it was done simply to demean him. I am sure we still don't know all the facts. I can see him being on the next dancing show. |

| 552472 | 2007-05-23 11:09:00 | My understanding of TPS is where for example, you succeed amazingly as in work several weeks in a month say, it is expected all the time?.... | SolMiester (139) | ||

I get it all the time of course. :D |
