745601 2009-02-07 06:52:00 Yeah, WTF wangfei:confused::confused::confused:?

But besides, people are suggesting the whole business is my modem's hardware issue? I mean, I don't really want to switch to any crappy broadband (bad broadband is already a justified fact in NZ) for a premium (at least they don't worth that much), and I don't really want to change a modem when my old one is perfectly working (but how much would a hard modem cost, and where can I get them? I live in CHCH, which isolates me from Auckland) .

Additionally, my dad's modem runs on Intel Ham driver, and I don't know whether it would matter if I make the switch . It's probably a soft modem as well, I'm not sure .

*sigh* even my ISP wouldn't offer me technical support (actually it is said in the Agreement) . But does not offering technical support for Linux means that they won't hook me on if I'm running in Ubuntu? I use Kiwi Online, BTW .

745602 2009-02-07 22:46:00 Thanks moderators, here's the newest update:

The weird sound was gone itself, after I booted into XP and successfully connected to the internet by dial up . Now Ubuntu would dial properly, but new problems had occurred .

I ran sudo wvdial and got this:

dm@dm-desktop:~$ sudo wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1 . 60
--> Initializing modem .
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized .
--> Sending: ATDT087305656
--> Waiting for carrier .
ATDT087305656
CONNECT 460800
--> Carrier detected . Starting PPP immediately .
--> Starting pppd at Sun Feb 8 11:16:48 2009
--> Pid of pppd: 5979
--> Using interface ppp0
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> local IP address 202 . 150 . 121 . 137
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> remote IP address 222 . 152 . 43 . 193
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> primary DNS address 210 . 55 . 12 . 1
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> secondary DNS address 210 . 55 . 12 . 2
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]

but it froze from there . So I stopped it with ctrl+c . Then this came up:

Caught signal 2: Attempting to exit gracefully . . .
--> Terminating on signal 15
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> Connect time 0 . 5 minutes .
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> pppd: [06][08][06][08]
--> Disconnecting at Sun Feb 8 11:17:17 2009

Then I tried with GNOME PPP, and the log gave me a better idea:

Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!"
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1 . 60
--> Initializing modem .
--> Sending: ATZ

--> The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code = 16)
--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail .
--> Try again and look into /var/log/messages and the wvdial and pppd man pages for more information .

It seemed to stop by itself .

Since PPPD seemed a good place to go, I typed sudo pppd and got this:

~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}*A . }'}"}(}"gu~

I don't really know what that's talking about .

So where's the problem? Thanks for everyone's help .
