552213 2007-05-22 22:58:00 Linux and Mac are in the realm of an alternative religion.

I think Linux machines will remain in the realm "geek-tech enthusiast" and back end server category for some time yet rather than moving into mainstream "mum and dad public" compared to Macs on the other hand, which will continue to infiltrate homes and schools/universities from where they will be gradually incorporated into corporate enterprise with the recent university graduates, a bit of a "back door entry/trojan horse" into the Windows world.

Macs are generally for people who like to get stuff done without a lot of fuss (aka "tinkering")

Fortunately all 3 systems can work quite happily with each other in a work environment.

552214 2007-05-22 23:12:00 1 - On the whole, users aren’t all that dissatisfied with Windows
True, they're mostly dissatisfied with what happens in it, like Viruses / Spyware ;)

2 - Too many distros
Agreed - See www.distrowatch.com

3 - People want certainty that hardware and software will work
Its actually heaps better than many people give credit. Where its lacking is some Firewire devices, and Webcams... other than that, specifically the more recent kernels, are actually pretty damn good. Also, distro choice determines what drivers they build into the kernel.

4 - As far as most people are concerned, the command line has gone the way of the dinosaur
Yet its become a bigger part of Vista ;)
Thats the great thing about the likes of the latest Ubuntu (Can you tell Im liking it? ;) ), if you dont want to, there is never any need to use it :) Gui rules from installing driver updates for nVidia to adding new software, to re-partitioning.

5 - Linux is still too geeky
Yeah, it does just have that 'feel' to it when you mention it to people..

He forgot gaming.
That still aint perfect, and its a big turn off for lotsa people sadly :(

552215 2007-05-22 23:31:00 Speaking of games, I saw this video the other day on what "might" have been before MS did the deal with Halo....
www.youtube.com

For Linux to really take off and get mainstream acceptance it would have to be cut down to ONE version that had a modern simple GUI with a plug and play setup that was easy to use for mum and dad consumers, which is pretty much what MS is aiming for and where Apple has been since 1984 (although Apple took a bit of a detour between 1985 and 1997 with regards to 3rd party apps)

Linux also needs some sex appeal for it to gain traction, get a few smart sexy women in some print and web ads extolling the virtues of Linux.
Apple has a female Mac Genius in one of their latest "Get a Mac" ads.
Guys shouldn't forget that women are smart too.

552216 2007-05-23 00:28:00 3 - People want certainty that hardware and software will workAs it does with vista :p

Actually i installed XP in someone else's machine. I had to install third party drivers for everything, reboot more times than i can remember, waste hours AND i realized just before i gave the horrid machine back that sound wasn't happening. I'd forgotten how mindlessly unnecessarily difficult it is to install windows

I hear XP is not an option for those wanting to use SATA drives as well, at least not as their main HDD, unless they are prepared to do a LOT of tweaking.

Although *nix isn't without unexplained issues either... i've only just got my spell checker back in FF after installing Debian-etch. All good now though!

If i tried to install vista on this machine....(which i wouldn't) i think vista would fall over in disgust!

So what people really want is something that they can just Buy/pick up- take home-plug in-go- at a reasonable price.
seems reasonable.

seems reasonable.Very true. Of course this makes it almost irrelevant what OS is running, so long as it "works"

It is however a little harder to walk into a shop and find a computer with etch (for example) already installed :(

I could site my friends case, who had a dual boot windows/mepis system installed, and now has a system that can only boot Mepis, as windows did not survive real life usage with real life hazards and abuse of the machine by unknowing users. Mepis was only installed for my amusement. Were it not installed, she would not have a working computer.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is "etch" ?
winmacguy (3367)
552220 2007-05-23 01:24:00 Excuse my ignorance, but what is "etch" ?Etch is the latest Debian release, Debian 4 if you like . The previous was code named "Sarge" .

Etch has been released as a stable version for only a month or two . It is the OS my personal machine (POS) and my server (server) run, although server hasn't the burden of a GUI to run . In servers case, it was installed by bletch remotely while Etch was still classed as "unstable" which means, in Debian terms, that it was still experimental .

So far server has only gone down due to planned maintenance, and the embarrassing fact that hackers CAN get in if you have a password that is a numeric sequence ( my bad  )
