745646 2009-02-07 09:53:00 You'll probably lose whats on it, if you format it in NTFS

But, if you're booting from it now, (using it like a floppy) it wont be bootable after you format it in NTFS

Theyre usually formatted in FAT, for this reason

745648 2009-02-07 10:00:00 You could probably format it in exfat format, the update for this is here (www.microsoft.com)

This needs to be installed first, (XP SP2 or 3 MUST be installed) then select it by right mouse / format.

Its meant to be better than NTFS. And you'll probably still be able to boot from it

Only thing is whatever you plug it into, may have to have the same update

745649 2009-02-07 10:01:00 will it work in vista? GameJunkie (72)
745650 2009-02-07 10:05:00 That update wont no.

Vista may support exfat already I think. Plug the USB flash drive in and right mouse / format. If it shows exfat then Vista supports it

745651 2009-02-07 10:08:00 vista does support exfat, will i have to move the data somewhere else before formatting>? GameJunkie (72)
745652 2009-02-07 10:13:00 Umm should have mentioned, if you use it for readyboost (I've read that) formatting usb flash drives in exfat will kill it (readyboost)

So, if youre going to use it for readyboost , I wouldnt format it in exfat

You'll have to leave it as is

745653 2009-02-08 07:22:00 don't use readyboost so shouldn't be a problem GameJunkie (72)
745654 2009-02-08 07:30:00 don't use readyboost so shouldn't be a problem

Formatting a drive loses all data unless you have recovery tools.
So my advice is to copy all data from the USB stick to another drive before you format.
