745489 2009-02-06 05:43:00 My nephew went and bought a gaming PC with Vista 64 bit Ultimate installed. Unfortunately there seem to be no third party progs, such as Symantec Ghost or Acronis, that work in 64 bit.

We were hoping to install a second XP 32 bit OS, then switch between that and Vista using one of those disk imagers, as and when needed.

At the moment I can't think of a data backup and restore solution that would give us some room to experiment.

Any suggestions most welcome :)

You can see if DriveImageXML is compatible with 64bit...

745491 2009-02-06 05:57:00 Thanks :) Whether dual-boot or not, the point of exercise is backing up C drive's 64 bit data and being able restore from the image if we need to. There is currently no way to do that, given the relative scarcity of 64 bit progs. braindead (1685)
745492 2009-02-06 06:00:00 You could boot up from an UBCD4Win CD then image it to an external drive?

I suggest you don't image it to the same drive, as that defeats the purpose of backing up

745493 2009-02-06 07:17:00 doesnt vista have a backup utility preinstalled? could just burn off system restore files? hueybot3000 (3646)
745494 2009-02-06 19:28:00 Yes, Vista has a backup utility preinstalled, but only Business and Ultimate do full PC backups. No, you cannot burn System Restore files as you cannot (easily) access them in the first place. pcuser42 (130)

Hold on. Ghost and Paragon which I use, doesn't care what O/S is loaded. You're not trying to do this from within windows are you?

You should just boot with the image program and then image it. 64bit doen't even come into it.

745496 2009-02-06 20:31:00 Yes you create a boot CD from the software then boot from it and do it that way gary67 (56)
745497 2009-02-08 07:49:00 Ghost 14 screams when I try to create a restore CD/DVD. Something about the 64 bit drivers it needs to run properly.

My impression is that 64 bit Vista is still a big empty landscape that still needs to be filled with useful software utilities and progs.

745498 2009-02-08 08:07:00 I use Casper with Vista 64 bit. Works fine for me CliveM (6007)
