746425 2009-02-10 01:41:00 Thinking of playing PS2 and X-Box360 games with opponents /friends on the internet. I sort of know how to set up a LAN network but will that work with connecting to other computers that are not in the same house/room that I am in?
I have a DSL 1.6MB/s D-load with max 700kB/s Upload speeds, Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC through A Linksy's ADSL2+ AM300 modem/Router
Do I need to connect through a Server?
Other players will need an internet connection i presume, I expect it will have to be Broadband.
Obviously I will need the Game console connected to my computer; anyway the game console can be direct connected to the internet to eliminate the LAG one gets when connecting console to computer via a Gamebridge or other such adapter.
Is the LAN setup on all I need to have on my computer? (the other people will need to have the same I guess)
Or do I need to set up either a WAN or VPN connection?

746426 2009-02-10 02:12:00 Xbox live?...not sure about ps2.. Blam (54)
746427 2009-02-10 02:42:00 cheers blam6. I have been using search at PCW and searching the net. Most of the pointers are about LAN at home or office block/ school etc. I have checked out the ones listed here:
au.search.yahoo.com

performit.co.uk

www.extremelan.net

palgn.com.au

www.abc.net.au

www.speedy3d.com

Something will emerge. I don't think/know if a multi player game can be played ie: Dungeons and Dragons ( yeah I know, it went out with the Ark, just an example).
Thanks

746428 2009-02-10 03:09:00 Basically, if you have DHCP turned on your LAN, then your Xbox 360 / PS3 will find the LAN connection just fine & be able to play over the 'net with your friends. You shouldnt need to do any other adjustments. Chilling_Silence (9)
746429 2009-02-10 05:18:00 Cheers Chilling silence, I do have DHCP turned on. I will check it out with my mate up north in Auckland later this evening and make sure that he has DHCP turned on. I'd say he has.
I read this bit below which helped also but I'll try your suggestion first, it seems to be the most straightforward method.
Much obliged, ta.

""What about Multi-player Capabilities?

Both the Xbox and PS2 have multi-player capability. You can hook up a series of both consoles so that you and your friends can play games together at the same time. The Xbox may be connected using a home LAN system, much like your home computers (here's another example of how the Xbox is more like a specialized gaming computer). The PS2 may be connected using a link cable, not a LAN. This system may be cost prohibitive for some gamers, since you have to own multiple consoles, seperate TVs for each, and several copies of the same game (yep, that's expensive).""

Of course, you can always ditch the local network and play through the internet. Both PS2 and Xbox allow you to play online against a random assortment of opponents. Xbox uses Xbox live, a fairly well supported online gaming network. PS2's network is not as popular as Xbox Llive, but it works fairly well all the same. If you are really into multi-player, it seems that Xbox is probably the best console for you.""

746430 2009-02-10 05:47:00 to late to edit my last reply:
Whoops, mistake. I have just checked Computer Management > Services and DHCP Client is Disabled. I presume that it needs to be Enabled and will do that shortly. I'll see that my mate has the same.
Why would DHCP Client be disabled, its for managing Network Configuration by registering and updating IP addresses and DNS names? I do have my own Static IP address and the DNS i have is constant.
I'm using a Compaq Presario S3010AN, AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67GHz, 1.5GB DDR 333 PC 2700 RAM, WXP Pro SP3.
Mate has a dual core Acer, full specs I don't know and is running WXP Home SP2 and has TC Xtra Broadband connection.
Should be alright, find out soon.

746431 2009-02-10 06:09:00 Whoops # 2. You did say DHCP in the LAN tuned on, not in the computer. Same thing?
I'll tinker some more.

746432 2009-02-10 07:11:00 Whoops #3. I certainly will not be Enabling DHCP Client.
DHCP must be turned on, so the ISP I am with informs me otherwise I wouldn't be able to connect to the Internet.
For some reason the Command Prompt window flashes briefly on screen and won't hold for me to see/ adjust anything. Been that way for three weeks. Nevermind that, I'm online.
Now I'll wait for the opposition to come online at 9.pm. and while I wait I'll check out the LAN connection details.
Should be alright.

746433 2009-02-10 09:28:00 Well I managed to get the info about the LAN being turned on from the ISP. All good, simply have to plug and play. Hope mate up north has the same, he not back from Nth Shore Hospital: X-rays on broken ribs that haven't healed properly in 4 months. Will see how it works tomorrow, if he's home.
Thanks.
