746010 2009-02-08 03:58:00 A friend of mine has dial up and I have been trying to help with their pc problems. Initially we were not able to get dial up connected at all. We did a system restore and some clean up work and were then able to dial up and stay connected. Emails come through Outlook Express, and although they take a long time they do come through. The issue is going on the Internet only lasts for a few minutes. The dial up connection stays connected and can still send/receive emails. Using Internet Explorer 7.0. A few people have suggested going into the settings, but we have not been able to find any settings that relate to only allowing on internet for a few mintues. Does anyone have any suggestions? The operating system is XP. hab (14602)
746011 2009-02-08 04:14:00 Has it been scanned for viruses / malware?

If its idle for 20 mins, it'll disconnect

Go to the dialup entry / double click on it / properties. Click on the options tab.

Change the 3rd option (on the bottom - idle time before hanging up) to never, then OK, OK. Then see if it disconnects

Also in OE, go to tools / options / connection tab . Untick the 2nd option (hang up after sending and receiving)

What firewall (if any) is installed?

746012 2009-02-09 03:45:00 if you can try another jackpoint, then perhaps a different modem or pc on the same jackpoint - in order to prove wether the problem is with the line or the pc. You can research how to set the maximum connection speed for the particular type of modem then reduce it in small steps to try and improve stability (usually a line of text in the modem options).

Also avoid using double adaptors and extension cords for the phone connection as much as possible, these are not designed for data and almost always degrade the signal noticeably.

Dialups have always been a bit problematic unfortunately, prone to interference and errors in many cases.
