| 745793 | 2009-02-07 20:55:00 | I have AVG Free version 8.0.233 installed on my laptop (Vista home basic OS). In the last few days, windows defender has started saying that AVG is no longer protecting my computer from viruses - "AVG anti-virus free reports that it is turned off". When I say to turn it on, it asks for permission (I approve, I have admin priveleges) and then nothing happens. When I try to update AVG nothing happens. I've checked the processes and services and there's no "AVG Update Service". Also, when I tried to turn on my laptop yesterday it wouldn't at first and when it did turn on I got an error message saying a recently installed piece of software or hardware caused my computer not to start properly. AVG scans fine, it only found some cookies. At first I couldn't delete them ("Access Denied" and some more which I unfortunately can't remember...) and would only remove them once I did a scan with CC Cleaner - which, as far as I could tell, didn't even remove the cookies that AVG claimed to find. I've scanned my computer with trojan remover and it only found one worm (the one that sends emails to your outlook express contacts which isn't a problem because I don't use Outlook). And the worm is in Diablo 2 which I've had for weeks now and I haven't cracked it using a program - just added files from the CD so it runs without. I've run spybot which found a few things which I got rid of and hasn't helped. Lastly, I've run hijackthis and below is the log results. Any help would be much appreciated as I recently read that some trojans make your antivirus look like it's working when it isn't... | 745796 | 2009-02-07 21:52:00 | The log looks fine Sounds like Vista is the prob when its saying AVG isnt working. According to this (freeforum.avg.com) Try what one person tried and it fixed it All I did was turn off UAC - Reboot - turn on UAC and then rebooted. |
