554765 2007-05-31 22:42:00 My PC's PSU died this morning. Just wondering if this is a common occurence?

I've not had this happen to me in over ten years of computing, but this morning I go to switch on the machine and although the monitor went live, nothing else happened. A cursory glance at the back of the box showed smoke coming from the PSU vent, with a horrible acrid smell (which tends to make it obvious that the PSU has died).

I bought the machine second hand about 18 months ago - it was a year old at the time, originally assembled by Assent. Not sure of the make of PSU yet, but I'll open the box later after a couple more coffees.

Anyway, I feel gutted... Mr Reliable has let me down :(

What is the PSU?

What is the PSU?Dunno yet... I'm about to check it's innards shortly. I guess I'll just get the Thermaltake PSU from DSE to replace it. 90 bucks which I wish I didn't have to spend right now. *sobs*

554769 2007-06-01 01:19:00 PSU failure is currently the most comman hardware failure .

its simply due to large amounts of cheap and nasty PSU's being used and idiot cost cutting techs useing undersized PSU's to save a few cents .

i've got an old p1 (100mhz?) system that has a better powersupply than most pc's have gotten over the last 5 years .

I mean really - what am I ... an Island? No. I compute, therefore I am! :)

Consider yourself lucky that it didn't destroy anything else!

Bad luck though, in your case. :(

554774 2007-06-01 05:07:00 Well thats what the insurance compay is for .

And they have something called an excess . . . probably not worth it for a PSU .

Yep Greg- I had one go on me a couple of years ago, seemed it took the MB with it . A rebuild with a Thermaltake PSU and new MB etc did the trick (good reason to 'upgrade'!) The Thermaltake is a 430w 'Purepower' from memory, goes all day most days without a hiccup even though some people say they are 'over rated' . . . . or should that be under rated?

Now you can convince Mrs Greg that you need something bigger/better/faster . . . if there's any way you can blame Pixel that would help :D
