| 554736 | 2007-05-31 07:47:00 | My broadband had been getting steadily worser and worser, even more worser:horrified . 18 months ago I was getting downloads anywhere between 1600 - 2000 kbps; lately, lucky if I could get 700 - 800 and at certain times of the afternoon, worse even than my old dial up was, which is many moons ago. I rang broadband help and talked to a very reasonable guy, who walked me through the problem we rural people have and while upgrading is happening in the more populated areas, it's going to be some time before it happens in the sticks - economic reality. He went on to inform me that the choke point we have here, is in our cabinet exchange, which is a couple of kms down the road. Apparently it will cost about $70k's to replace, and while thats not a huge amount, if the cost of new cable is taken into consideration as well, it does start to look costly. Plus the resource consent process (the biggest handicap to enterprise in NZ). Anyway, he said he'd get them to look into my problem and I hung up, happy in the knowledge I'd been dealing with a reasonable interesting person. Anyway, things got worse and from about 200kbps it went to no internet at all, so when I got back from a meeting in town, about 9-30pm, I rang Telecom again. Different person, but another reasonable one. He told me that he'd leave no stone unturned to get me back to that 1600-2000kbps that I used to have (and which bearing in mind the distance out, I am, and equipment limitations I'm quite happy with). Went to bed knowing everything was going to be fine in the morning. This morning; still no internet. Rang Telecom again, different person, but very interested in getting me back on line again. He admitted that the test he ran showed I was not connected and he said he would get someone onto it right away. Oh, yeah, I thought, I've heard this before (starting to get disillusioned). Got in at lunchtime, great, I've got internet. Did a speed test, 1600 kbps. Been testing on & off all afternoon & evening and it's holding up there quite steady with very little variation. First time for months that it doesn't drop away hugely in the afternoon and evening:thumbs: I wonder what they did:confused: |
