554702 2007-05-31 07:37:00 Apparently Telecom are going to announce that they will be switching to GSM technology, which is the same as Vodafone. Could be good for competition, as people will be able to easily switch between providers, by just switching their sim card. rogerp (6864)
554703 2007-05-31 07:42:00 Amazing, they are getting something right. Unfortunately when they first picked CDMA which apparently was/is technically better, not enough other countries pick or carried on with it. Too bad it is going to cost them 400 million to swap over.... Virtually every decent new phone these day is a GSM phone including the iPhone due out next month. winmacguy (3367)

It is probably a bit like sony beta vs vhs videos. beta produced better pictures, but vhs was was more widely used.

I imagine thats where a lot of the yellowpages profits will go to set it up. That would probably see a better return on investment than investing in their fixed line network.

554705 2007-05-31 08:13:00 Apparently though, GSM networks do have a lot of bandwidth available that is not being utilised .....yet.. for video networks and song downloads. It will be interesting to see what happens next month... winmacguy (3367)
554706 2007-05-31 08:59:00 So Telecom are more then happy to spend $400 million to upgrade to GSM, but won't spend anywhere near that on fixing the pitiful state of our broadband. :groan: DarkCypher (11945)

Now why would you need a phone to do all that?

As they can make money from mobile phones, but they can’t with broadband e.g. hardware, bandwidth costs etc…

You don't need a phone to do all of that, however it is convenience to have the ability to be able to download a song you just heard on the radio onto your phone + the phone networks need to be able to generate more revenue since the are not getting a lot from the reduced cost of voice calls.

I believe there are far higher margins with mobile, then they would ever be able to get with fixed line broadband. People do expect broadband for next to nothing.

Has anyone noticed how there are a lot of rumblings with Vodafone, and that they maybe selling up, but they have come out twice denying it. Obviously Telecom wouldn't be allowed to purchase them due to competition laws, but if they could I am sure they would. It would then mean that they purchase an already setup GSM network.

What I want to know is why do we need 2 seperate GSM networks. It is a waste of money duplicating the infrastructure, and means that consumers will end up paying more, as it is the consumers who end up paying for infrastructure in the calling rates. I believe the UK only has one, which multiple providers use.

Maybe this is a political move by telecom, by saying that they are setting up a new GSM network, when they don't really intend to.

554711 2007-05-31 12:25:00 I was always under the impression that Telecom was forced to set up the CDMA network by the government, as they thought this would promote competition? I sincerely hope they realize how wasteful it would be two have two of the exact same networks in our country. roddy_boy (4115)
