Pongy smell unavoidable

The Christchurch City Council is apologising to residents for the lingering smell in the air over the past week. Contractors have been replacing four large pumps at the Christchurch's wastewater treatment plant as part of a $3.1 million upgrade.

Council operations and maintenance manager Mike Bourke says the smell is unavoidable as work on the plant had to be done.

Now....my spell-checker vomited all over that..and that's some of the fun..but what is "PONGY" all about?

554578 2007-05-30 21:08:00 A pong is a bad smell, SJ. So, "pongy smell" = "a nasty smell smell". Don't be surprised by this - two factors are in evidence here:
1. Kiwi journalism sucks; journalists can't even use the vernacular properly. Journalists here rank about the same level as real estate agents in terms of current rankings of the trust in which professions are held. They are slightly above politicians (who are at the bottom of the list below sex workers) (no pun intended).
2. Kiwis frequently double up on adjectives like "she is a tiny wee girl". Comes from the Scots ancestry, don't you know?

554579 2007-05-30 22:00:00 It is the same as ASB (Auckland Savings Bank) Bank and NZI(New Zealand Insurance) Insurance, its a bit like I am going for a ride in the car car.
Catchy but stupid.

Anyway G'day Surfer Joe from the land of the long white cloud
I've been up since the sparrows fart as i had to change the nappy on the anklebiter, and then been running at full tit to get the older kids to school, although at this hour there aren't any hoons on the road to contend with, mind you I keep forgetting they have added judder bars outside one of the schools and hitting them in the old bomb makes me S**T a brick, anyway i am so damn knackered that anyone who pisses me off is likely to get their laughing gear wrapped around a knuckle sandwich, so hopefully by this arvo when I go to pick the sprogs up, i will be a box of birds, Now I'll sit down with my cuppa and just chill out for a while, which reminds me I've still got to contact the Oldies, as my sister is up the duff with her second sprog and I need to know when it is due

Slang is an odd thing, I recently had to ask someone (Scottish) what Shoogly meant as i had never heard the term

Nice one Nigel (I bet SJ won't get the origin of that expression!).

The Guid Scots Tongue is difficult enough without adding Scots slang! If you want to find out what any Scots words/expressions mean (not Gaelic - I mean the other branch of English - the Mither Tongue of the Scots) you can go to http://www.scots-online.org/ and they have a neat Online Scots Dictionary there (which shows the meaning of shoogly!).

I used that dictionary to translate a poem written in Scots by my great great uncle that was in the Robert Burns style (GGUnc was born in Ayrshire and Burns was his great hero as he is for most Lowlanders). The dictionary worked really well.

Mostly however, we use a teatowel we bought in Edinburgh that has all the common Scots words explained!

554583 2007-05-31 01:25:00 yeah to figure out shoogly I was sent to this site (www.firstfoot.com), It was actually quite suprising how much of the vernacular there that we use here or seems to be universal. Morgenmuffel (187)
554584 2007-05-31 03:00:00 Hey, thanks for that site Nigel! Awesome links. It is now in my bookmarks for exploring and future reference.

Och aye the noo!

Surprisingly, many of them are used here too in the US..maybe not in SoCal...but in places that actually speak English.....

you seem to get that everywhere now, the weird thing is when the same slang word means different things in 2 countries
for instance Fanny means your bottom in the US, but it means something quite different here, i used to think Americans were quite crude when they were referring to fannys on family Tv shows (the most politically correct term i have heard for the NZ meaning of fanny is a womens front bottom, I just about pissed myself laughing when I heard that though)
