554011 2007-05-28 18:28:00 Stand by NZ . . . this is just the beginning of a new and slightly immoderate proposal by the medical profession . . . or not . :stare:

The Los Angeles Times ( . slate . com/W4RH02F4C34E93428703A31EC1C580" target="_blank">letters . slate . com) leads on the front page with word that a large private physician practice in California began posting a price list ( . slate . com/W4RH02F4C35E83428703A31EC1C580" target="_blank">letters . slate . com) for some medical services on its Web site .

HealthCare Partners Medical Group (http://www . healthcarepartners . com/) is one of the first, and probably the largest, physician practice to post prices online, and some think it could mark the beginning of a trend that would make it easier for patients to comparison shop for medical care . :(

Now, what we really need is "Doc-In-The-Box" ( . google . com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=10&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww . sfgate . com%2Fcgi-bin%2Farticle . cgi%3Ff%3D%2Fc%2Fa%2F2006%2F02%2F21%" target="_blank">www . google . com 2FBUGFTHARM31 . 554012 2007-05-29 05:31:00 This has the problem which is involved with all the "free market professions" . The customers are "free to choose" their practitioner . But they don't know who's any good . If the professional's skills fail to get the desired result, the professional doesn't mind . The customer pays anyway . The professional might offer to try another "solution", for another fee . The professional societies (trade unions) have always hated advertising and competition in pricing .

Comparison shopping might have unwanted consequences . Buying on price doesn't often get the best quality .
