MS could sell 400 million copies of Vista for a lot less than the current asking prices and still make a huge profit, considering that they only write once and stamp 400 million times - assuming they sell 400 million copies of course. MS isn't the only one guilty of overcharging. according to figures from yourself, apple also has some of the highest profit margins in the industry MS actually loses money on alot of their products, relying mainly on ripping us off on office and OS software for profit |

| 555089 | 2007-06-02 06:23:00 | Hmm, yes you are right... I guess I never reall worked out the math... and if they sold 400'000'000 and they had spent 6'000'000'000 that means each copy would be $15 I assume that you have used USD? OK then, I retract my last statement :) I did use US$, Glad someone could work out the math, I'm pretty dyslexic in that dept. Your quite right motorbyclist, Apple does have some of the highest hardware profit margins in the business, they are also more efficient regarding cost when it comes to developing successful new products that run at a profit from the time they hit the shop shelves/customers pockets . The trick is to work out your production and manufacturing and distribution costs then ad a bit of profit margin and see what customers are willing to pay for your product. The difference is that people actually wait in line to by Apple products (just watch when the iPhone comes out later this month), all MS gets is mediocre OS reviews while companies hold off deciding if it is worth investing in Vista when XP is still working just fine. Yes gamers did cue up for the Xbox which is not yet profitable, the Zune hasn't sold 1 million units ....yet. |

| 555091 | 2007-06-02 06:51:00 | I thought so... :p I just pulled the 400 million sales figure out of the air although the ?6 billion US is roughly what Vista cost. Either way it is still hugely over priced especially if public reaction is anything to go by. |

| 555092 | 2007-06-02 06:59:00 | too true i doubt they made 4 million in sales though |

| 555093 | 2007-06-02 07:07:00 | Well they have definitely had sales to the public since I see that Vista market share is up to 3.74% for May up from 3.02% although I suspect that there is a lot of channel stuffing going on to inflate the sales figures. That basically means that MS has shipped x amount of copies to its OEM vendors and retail outlets and billed them for it, however a lot of those copies are still sitting on showroom shelves. | winmacguy (3367) | ||
| 555094 | 2007-06-02 07:11:00 | I thought the 400M sounded a little high... even for an MS estimate :p According to Stuff.co.nz (www.stuff.co.nz) as at the 16th on May Vista had almost reached 40M so if we use 45M as an estimate for now then that means that to cover the $6B cost (we need to add in marketing and all that though) they could sell Vista at $134 USD per copy and that is going to cover the $6B at this current stage... Note: Vista has different versions costing different prices but this is only an estimate on what they can sell it for and still gain a profit EDIT Woah, this thread has gone REALLY off topic :waughh: :p |

Mind you even if they only charged $200 a copy for Vista (giving them $66 profit on each copy sold) that is still a fair amount although it makes the 6 billion develop cost look excessive. Still no excuse to pirate it though. |

| 555096 | 2007-06-02 13:15:00 | lol - why would you want it in the first place? although, i do approve of "pirate" versions/mods whereby alot of the drm crap is removed. no-one said you didn't have to pay for the software first of course. |

| 555097 | 2007-06-02 13:24:00 | When it comes to MS, I would rather use suitable alternative software where ever possible than use or pirate their stuff, that way they don't financially benefit from me any more than is necessary and I am not breaking any laws. | winmacguy (3367) | ||
