554448 2007-05-31 09:22:00 Another triumph of privatisation of essential services. zqwerty (97)
554449 2007-05-31 10:35:00 So maybe they couldn't afford an ambulance, but I am sure it would be better to get one and have to pay it off than to die! :illogical

Exactly. This seem to be a prime candidate for the Darwin Awards.

554450 2007-05-31 11:19:00 It is absolutely the family's fault. The sons couldnt lift her, sure, but they couldn't lift a phone? I mean have you seen the sons? They are so not running out of food at that house. Mercury is doing exactly what their charter says and they are doing it well.

Greg, mate I respect your opinions usually but you are going crazy is you really believe all that hokum. Capitalism means making money OK, not running a charity for every sob story they here (which would be numerous I assume).

The only blame I would lay on Mercury is that they havent been stronger in defending their actions and their contractors. Completely the family's fault- I mean singing hymns??? What were they thinking?

554451 2007-05-31 12:12:00 A powercut, basically the same thing as the power getting cut off . . .

OR what about an accidental cut off? I have had that happen here . . . a power company contractor cut out power off when meaning to cut another houses off, I saw him come up the privte drive we live up and he just got out, pulled the plug and it was too late to catch him, he never went to any houses to tell them . . . and is was obvious to what houses the fuses belonged to . . . it had the house numbers on it . . . :groan:

So maybe they couldn't afford an ambulance, but I am sure it would be better to get one and have to pay it off than to die! :illogical

Do you guys have to pay for an ambulance up there? We have them free here in Wellington, but you pay a donation afterwards .

Do you have to pay the ambulance before they will take you?

Do you have to pay the ambulance before they will take you? Notice that I am down Wellington? ;) I don't know, but from what I have heard the ambulance is not free up there . . . :waughh:

554453 2007-05-31 20:24:00 Notice that I am down Wellington? ;) I don't know, but from what I have heard the ambulance is not free up there . . . :waughh:Correct - the ambulance service is not free up here . However, they do not charge you at the time, you get an invoice in the mail a few weeks later .

And speaking from experience, when you need one, the cost is the LAST thing you think about!! In fact it didn't even cross my mind until I got the invoice - which I happily paid for the service rendered, on the basis that if that hadn't provided that service I wouldn't be around to pay the invoice anyway . . .

Just wondering... What is the cost for an ambulance up there? It was the best $67.50 (April 2004) I ever spent, despite it only being about 2.5km to North Shore Hospital.

Well its certainly the first thing my Mother thought about.
Until I told her about the St John membership thing you can get.

554457 2007-05-31 22:01:00 $67.50 in AK if you're eligible for the DHB subsidy or $575 if you're here as a vistor and you're not from
* Citizens from Niue, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Ross Dependency

* UK citizens normally residing in the UK and visiting NZ and seeking urgent medical treatment.
