554977 2007-06-03 01:28:00 At Auckland Grammar, all our teachers are running Windows on their shiny new laptops except the IT guys where its 1Mac vs 1PC. Guess who's more helpful and less full of himself??? beeswax34 (63)
554978 2007-06-03 01:50:00 At my old school everything was PC except 2 Macs... a Music recording one and Music editing one... and that was only because the stupid recording studio manager they got in was pro Mac :badpc: I never liked that guy... The_End_Of_Reality (334)

I take it they were using Garageband and or Logic Pro for recording and editing.
Ive known of some PC admin type to be pretty closed in their way of thinking, happens on both sides of the fence I guess.

554980 2007-06-03 03:14:00 Ironically you often find the Mac admin types are more able to sort out PC related admin problems than PC types who can't find the "start" button on a Mac. winmacguy (3367)

Were they on OS9 or OS X prior to switching and do they play a lot of games?

If they have never done a virus scan before, they certainly will be now:p

I'm guessing they were possibly looking for a cheaper computing replacement to upgrade to and couldn't find a Mac that was suitable.

554983 2007-06-03 08:29:00 I am not sure what software the recording studio was using...

I would think OS9, I have not actually seen the Mac, she just said that she will look at a PC and will get me to build one. No games, just the net and office type stuff.

Virus scans are not a worry, they run in the background and scan on a schedule...

554984 2007-06-03 08:41:00 OS9 ... ouch no wonder they need an upgrade. I take it they don't use it for any actual recording work.
Depending on their price range a Mac mini would have done ($1200) it although they are soon to be discontinued.
No doubt you will build them a decent PC package for a similar price.

554985 2007-06-03 08:44:00 Note the recording studio and relative are 2 different things...

Yes, I can...

554986 2007-06-03 08:50:00 Was your relative connected to an existing PC network at her work or just a sole machine, because file sharing with OS9 on a PC network can annoying. OS X is pretty straight forward.
Well good luck and I am pretty sure that she will appreciate the machine you build for her, TEoR. :)
