554438 2007-05-31 00:18:00 Look at the facts:
* The woman needed her electricity powered oxygen machine
* The power was cut
* The woman dies

No matter how much meandering there is around the truth, Mercury played a part in the death of the woman.

Final fact:
* Mercury are a bunch of scum sucking low lifes who should all be hung, drawn and quartered.

Look at the facts:

* There friggin' aren't any!

No-one knows all the facts yet. Conjecture only.

Always enjoyed your posts Greg....until that one.

554439 2007-05-31 01:03:00 I sympathise with the family in their sad loss, but, Allblack and others, you are so right. We don't know the full facts, yet. We may never get all the facts..could be "he said this or he said that" and denials from each party.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story seems to be the strategy of the media and many others, including some politicians.

I once worked for a utility (not Mercury Energy) and could write a book on the stories given to prevent disconnection after non-payment. Having said that, I know that in my area, those assigned the unpleasant task of carrying out the disconnection, would have reported the situation back to the office and left without disconnecting. I saw many instances such as that.

We had a register of people who were dependent on power driven life saving machinery, not just for non-payment disconnections, but for planned outages as well, to allow them time to make alternative arrangements. To keep our registers up to date we relied heavily on the medical data being supplied. In this wonderful world of computerisation, where you would think this would be simplistic, these sort of things seem to have been put in the "too hard basket"

Mercury, aka scum sucking, leeching, ill advised, mindless, inhumane, pond dwelling, death and/or life deciding, gods of their own empire, maniacal power switchers decided that a bit less than two hundred dollars was worth more than a person's life.

Simple. Pay ya bill.

Glad to see you and Mercury are getting on so well! :D

Fact is, we may never know the truth, as a lot of it may have died with the woman concerned.

Just spent three hours in the car listening to talkback.....1/3 blame Mercury, 1/3 blame the family and the last 1/3 blame the Guvmint !

Oh yeah. South Auckland. I love a good stereotype!

Didnt the woman live for 3 hrs after the power was turned off, didnt the son ask the woman if she needed to get to the hospital......

Absolutely no blame to Mercury here, business is business, if they needed the power they shouyld of advised the power company of medical needs.

The woman should of taken responsiblity for HERSELF, get a damn ambulance as suggested by the son. Get off your fat arse and help yourself!!!

554443 2007-05-31 07:02:00 With Mercury (www.nzherald.co.nz) at the moment.... just dont feel like paying them any more money at the moment.

My question was simple - what other power companies are out there? Thanks to those that answered.The question was loaded, not simple. If it had been simple you would have simply said "I want to change power companies from Mercury, what other companies are there?". However the original post said nothing like that and contained a link to the current headliner 'news'.

As said previously in this forum, things can be meant one way yet taken another. Same applies to this thread and the original post

Have you ever worked for Mercury Greg?

I have . And you are strangely accurate in your description .

It is the most unpleasant company I have ever had the misfortune to work for . They are ruthless and unforgiving to customers and their staff, and downright immoral - all the customer services reps were not to tell people about the government legislated tariffs because they didn't make enough money out of them . And they told the reps also never to inform customers if the company owed them money . Go ahead if you are with Mercury . Ask them point blank if they owe you money form all previous accounts/addresses .

There were many "accidental" disconnections when I was there .

Still, the inquiry has not returned a concrete finding in this case, so you can't blame them yet for this .

Aren't they the same company that were behind the power crisis in the Auckland CBD a number of years ago .

Personally I think the hospital has a lot to answer for . This is because it appears that she was reliant on the oxygen to live . Therefore she shouldn't have been at home, as residential power is provided on 'best effort' . If there was also a powercut, which are becoming more common, she may have been in the same situation and also died . Hospitals however have better power supplies and backup generators . Therefore if the oxygen was critical, she shouldn't have been at home . Simple as that . I suspect sending her home was a cost cutting measure by the hospital .

554447 2007-05-31 09:04:00 A powercut, basically the same thing as the power getting cut off . . .

OR what about an accidental cut off? I have had that happen here . . . a power company contractor cut out power off when meaning to cut another houses off, I saw him come up the privte drive we live up and he just got out, pulled the plug and it was too late to catch him, he never went to any houses to tell them . . . and is was obvious to what houses the fuses belonged to . . . it had the house numbers on it . . . :groan:

So maybe they couldn't afford an ambulance, but I am sure it would be better to get one and have to pay it off than to die! :illogical
