553786 2007-06-01 03:14:00 I was running a set of Altec lansing 5.1 speakers (and was more then happy with them) and I could easily distinguish the difference when switching between my Soundblaster Live and my intergrated audio chipset.

So I would say there will definiutly be a noticble difference, whether or not thats worth spending moire money on is the 99 dollar question.

My Soundblaster died so I am back to the onboard audio.....(for the last year or so)

Thanks Metla. With your card, did you lose your front audio ports like mejobloggs, or was that a peculiarity with the card he was using?

553787 2007-06-01 03:28:00 Never had my front ports hooked up, But generally that is the case, You wont be able to use them, Though the control box on my speakers has an audio out.

Otherwise you can just run an extension from the back plugs to the front, You can have em sitting lose beside the pc or mount them in a blank panel on the front if you so wish.

553788 2007-06-01 03:35:00 John, do you have Vista? mejobloggs (264)
553789 2007-06-01 03:35:00 OK, thanks. I only use the front ports for Skype to talk to someone on Pitcairn Is, and it looks as though I probably won't need to do that anymore anyway. If I was expecting to use Skype again I could just whizz around the back and plug the headset in cos those calls are always infrequent, and by appointment anyway.

Thanks for your advice.

553795 2007-06-01 04:40:00 I think a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic would be good. Cheapest price at Ascent. ($130)

Otherwise get a Creative SB Audigy 2 for about $80
