The only way for Telecoms to make any kind of money with broadband and wireless networks is to enable and control the downloading of music content such as ring tones and digital tracks for greatly inflated prices until the competition brings the price down which we can potentially expect to happen sometime after next year. | winmacguy (3367) | ||

Even to get the number switched over to the new phone took 3 days and 4 phone calls. We got a diifferent excuse each time. And what is it with their new voice menu system? It doesn't work, the thing was saying, OK lets try this a different way, and I didn't understand that even before I had spoken. Maddening. He didn't get Vodaphone because coverage here is useless. |

When I got my phone number swapped to a new phone, it only took 20 mins on the phone with the TC guy talking me through the steps with about 12 hours for the connection to be switched over. |

Whether it's caused by malice, greed or ignorance they have a tradition of arrogant indifference to the consumer smoothly blended with incompetence . On the bright side, if Telecom could improve to being merely useless, Vodafone would have to make an effort to be adequate . It may take time, but it will happen . . . . Yeah, right . ;) |

Telecom will probably be using the later UTMS (3G successor to GSM) rather than 1st generation GSM so the choice of handset may still be restricted. |

I sincerely hope they realize how wasteful it would be two have two of the exact same networks in our country. Yes the government had a hand in telecom using CDMA, as they thought having two different networks would provide competition, when it has almost had the opposite effect, as changing providers is a big hassle. Thats why I think telecoms announcement is political, because we don't need duplication of gs networks. I think they are trying to get the government to make vodafone open up or unbundle their network, and the money that telecom was going to invest in building a new gsm network would then go into the required fixed line upgrades to bring broadband standards up. That would be better for NZs economy. |

Could be good for competition, as people will be able to easily switch between providers, by just switching their sim card. so does that mean we all have to buy new phones then ? |

| 554721 | 2007-06-01 03:46:00 | I believe there are far higher margins with mobile, then they would ever be able to get with fixed line broadband . People do expect broadband for next to nothing . Has anyone noticed how there are a lot of rumblings with Vodafone, and that they maybe selling up, but they have come out twice denying it . Obviously Telecom wouldn't be allowed to purchase them due to competition laws, but if they could I am sure they would . It would then mean that they purchase an already setup GSM network . What I want to know is why do we need 2 seperate GSM networks . It is a waste of money duplicating the infrastructure, and means that consumers will end up paying more, as it is the consumers who end up paying for infrastructure in the calling rates . I believe the UK only has one, which multiple providers use . Maybe this is a political move by telecom, by saying that they are setting up a new GSM network, when they don't really intend to . Cos everyone uses GSM . There's like 7 GSM network providers in Hk . Each competiting against each other |
