554428 2007-05-30 10:36:00 The wider question here is what would have happened had there been a power cut (car hits pole or Transpower Grid failure).

The result would be the same, if indeed the lack of the machine was the cause (as yet undetermined).

If the need was that great, a backup supply would be mandatory. Bunnings sell generators (650 Watts) for $99.

As more info emerges I suspect the picture may change a bit.

"The District Health Board said Mrs Muliaga would not have been sent home if she needed the machine to stay alive."

554430 2007-05-30 11:51:00 Look at the facts:
* The woman needed her electricity powered oxygen machine
* The power was cut
* The woman dies

No matter how much meandering there is around the truth, Mercury played a part in the death of the woman.

Final fact:
* Mercury are a bunch of scum sucking low lifes who should all be hung, drawn and quartered.

Your saying that if it were any other company supplying electricity it would not have happened?

554432 2007-05-30 12:11:00 What about whoever was supposed to pay the freaking bill? I assume it was the husband, he deserves to be held accountable for this.

Greg, your argument is similar to this:

An homeless man is hungry. He asks a shop for food. Shop says no. Man dies.

Is the shop owner really at fault here?

This woman was receiving a service she wasn't paying for.

I'll see if SoCal Edison can get you an extension cord...might be a few days however.

554435 2007-05-30 21:14:00 The hospital said they didn't expect her to die without the machine. Perhaps the family didn't either.

The son did say he couldn't take her next door as she was too big for him to carry and she couldn't walk.

And dod you know you get charged for an ambulance - unless you have one of those St John cards?

So perhaps they thought they couldn't afford the ambulance either.

Whether or not it was their fault she died, its still rather a nasty thing to ignore the fact she had this machine and just cut it off anyway, perhpas he could have gone back to his supervisor first and got some advice.

I sure would have.

554437 2007-05-30 23:32:00 I worked for a utility a few years ago - not Mercury - in the billing area, so had a lot to do with Credit Control also. The stories people used to tell to try to prevent their power being cut off would be well-suited to an encyclopaedia of funny stories/straight-out lies. So even if the contractor had spoken to a family member, it is likely that there would have been a low credibility rating applied to the 'story'.

The media have blown this way out of proportion (as is their wont) and have obscured facts sufficiently to boil this whole issue down to a "he-said/she-said" fight.

Although it is sad that the woman died, it sounds like she should have been in hospital anyway.

And godfather brings a very pertinent argument to the table: had there been a power cut for any other reason, would the power company be in the same position it is now?

From my observations while employed at the power company, people seem to be anti-power company because they rely so heavily on their service and have no choice. Power is among the very few consumable items/services that are used BEFORE they are paid for. Try leaving a supermarket with a trolley full of shopping and telling them that you'll pay next month!!
