It also seems few people are aware of it even though it has been publicised though I have never personally seen the adverts. It transpires that if you are forced to extract money from your bank account(s) via an ATM machine that by the simple device of entering your PIN number "backwards" (ie. 1234 becomes 4321) the machine will still pay out the money but the Police will be automatically notified and the plod will be on the scene within minutes. Those of us in rural situations as well as the elderley and those vulnerable could well take notice of this safeguard. The tip came from one Kelvin.Ratnam@justice.govt.nz. Regards Gordon. |

| 554699 | 2007-06-01 05:54:00 | OK guys, I have been flamed and rightly so and am suitably chastised! I had never heard of this "urban myth" before and was more than a tad suspicious when I read the email. What gave some credence to the email was that it was sent from within the Justice Dept in Rotorua by a "friend" of mine who works there! My guess is that either it was a con by work colleagues or I was being conned!! (I think the former could be the case) Late last night I contacted Kelvin Ratnam and got a reply this morning saying more or less what you have all said in your posts. Said friend is now about to get a flaming as the email had a vast number of forwarding addresses. Note to self- "put brain in gear before posting and ask the question first". Just off to eat humble pie. Regards Gordon. |
