2009-02-12 02:10:00 | Hi, I posted about this in the thread about my computer being slow to start after installing an external hard drive and blam6 told me to post a hijack this log - I have, but have had no responses to that thread so thought I'd put in in a dedicated one in the hope someone can help me. | 747066 | 2009-02-12 02:30:00 | Its slow because of the immense amount of crap you have running in the background. Gee thanks! Now can you tell me how to NOT have crap running in the background because I am sure I'm not doing it on purpose!

2009-02-12 02:59:00 | Pardon the unfriendly reception that you have got there, Beemer I would turn off the following services: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: Adobe LM Service - Adobe Systems - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe Systems Shared\Service\Adobelmsvc.exe Wait for Speedy to pick out more unnecessary entries. Windows Defender has a poor malware detection rate. Personally, I won't use it in the first place. Do you have any form of Firewall running? Cheers :)

2009-02-12 03:02:00 | Pardon the unfriendly reception that you have got there, Beemer He's usually very helpful so must be sick of novices like me today! Thanks, will get rid of those bits, but I'm pretty sure they are the same bits I got rid of last time I asked for help - do they sneak back in without an invitation? I only have the Windows Defender as I have had trouble with other firewalls I've tried and someone told me that was fine. All suggestions welcomed!

2009-02-12 03:08:00 | Speedy is currently busy with other technology queries, that's all. Don't assume the worst of yourself, Beemer :) Windows Defender is only half-capable of detecting and removing malware; it has nothing to do with firewall. If you have got a router, then to some extent it is fine not to have a software firewall installed. Have you tried Comodo Firewall? It is free and very popular with forum users here. Cheers :)

2009-02-12 03:14:00 | I'm pretty sure Comodo was one I downloaded but then had trouble with - I'll see if I can find the thread I started about it. Can't remember what the problem was now but I'm pretty sure there was one - probably operator error rather than software though! | Beemer (6956) | |
2009-02-12 03:22:00 | Just did a search but must have been dreaming - couldn't find anything I'd posted in, so please tell me more about Comodo and what I need to do to protect my computer. I do have a wireless router installed. | Beemer (6956) | |
2009-02-12 03:41:00 | http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ - Here's the link to Comodo Firewall. What can I tell you? In short, it is free and good. Cheers :)

2009-02-12 03:48:00 | Ta! Will that replace Avast or can I use both side by side - I see Comodo has antivirus protection as well. Doh, just saw I had the opportunity to install one or both! | Beemer (6956) | |
