| 746579 | 2009-02-11 02:13:00 | Guys Been on XP for a LONG time and used Zone Alarm Pro, AVG 8 and Malwarebytes - all generally keeping most of my system running well..Got the odd spyware, hijack now and again but always managed to clean it out. Just built a new rig, installed the OS and then checked for security downloads and upgrades. Looking through the websites, apart from AVG 8, the other developers don't offer products/support for Vista x64, the best I saw was Vista x32. I've been using ZA Pro primarily for Firewall and AVG 8 for mail, online realtime and regular scanning. I also scanned every few days using Malwarebytes which seemed to find stuff AVG missed. Appreciate this may generate a few responses that vary wildly, and given I visit torrent sites now and again ( I know ! I know !) , what in your expert opinions would provide me with sufficient protection. Would AVG 8 on its own be sufficient or are there other products that would replace or add value to it. Thanks again guys for your continued help. Ged |

| 746583 | 2009-02-11 04:35:00 | Thx guys. Will lookthrough the options. NOD32 / 64 looks a possibility. I dont mind spending some cash as long as the value is / will be there when I need it. Utopian. Would I create a Guest account on the PC with reduced access rights etc and leave my original ADMINISTRATOR account alone for when I need to do system installs and upgrades etc ? Ta Ged |

| 746584 | 2009-02-11 04:56:00 | It wouldn't be a guest account (they have even more limited I think), but yes, you would have at least 2 accounts: an administrator (who can install drivers, programs etc etc) a limited user You'd basically want to use the limited user account as your main account. If you can't do something because it is too limited, you can simply right click on it and choose 'run as...' and then type in the admin credentials to run that single program with full administrator rights. If Microsoft made new user accounts default to limited accounts, I'm sure windows would have a much better reputation. Malware, viruses, trojans etc cannot damage a Windows install when running under limited account credentials :D. A trojan under an admin account can cause all sorts of damage. But if the trojan runs under a limited account, it can only damage your personal files, not the windows install itself. It is a bit of a hassle, because sometimes the run as option isn't available, so I switch user to administrator, do what I need, then switch back to my limited user. One caveat: some programs are poorly made and assume they are always run under a user account. For these you can just create a shortcut so it always runs under an administrator account. Apparently some games are bad like this. But it ain't Microsoft's fault for once! |
