2007-06-02 02:59:00 | SAN BERNARDINO - A local man is scheduled for arraignment today on charges he tried to kill a San Bernardino police officer by grabbing the officer's handgun during a scuffle Monday night and firing a shot, officials said. Ben Adinma Christ, 48, was charged Wednesday with attempted murder using a firearm and with assault on a police officer, said Susan Mickey, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County district attorney's office. Christ is being held at West Valley Detention Center in lieu of $500,000 bail. The incident began just before 7 p.m. Monday near 1460 N. Sierra Way. The officer, whose name was withheld, approached Christ to make a pedestrian check and found out he had a warrant for violating probation and failing to appear in court, said San Bernardino police Lt. Scott Paterson. When the officer tried to arrest Christ, the suspect "lost his temper," Paterson said. Adinma attacked the officer, striking him and causing enough chaos that the officer's baton and gun became loose, Paterson said. "It was a very bad brawl," he said. Paterson said it was unclear if Christ physically removed the weapons from the officer's belt, or if they fell out. Once the gun was free, Christ retrieved it and fired a single shot at the officer, Paterson said. The shot missed, and Christ dropped the handgun voluntarily, Paterson said. "That's a defining moment here," he said. "We could have been dealing with an injured or killed police officer." Backup arrived, and the officers were able to subdue and arrest Christ, Paterson said. The suspect is being reviewed for a possible mental condition, Paterson said. The officer complained of minor pain and was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but as of Wednesday was "doing OK," Paterson said. It is unknown if the officer violated any procedures in the scuffle, Paterson said. Well?

2007-06-02 03:06:00 | Possibly in a similar way. All NZ Police officers are trained to deal with firearms incidents relating to either hand guns or rifles/shotguns. NZ Police officers now wear protective vests similar to bullet proof vests (ours are supposed to deflect knife attacks). We also have the AOS (Armed Offenders Squad- similar to SWAT) as well as the Special Tactical Group which is above the AOS but below the NZ SAS. Firearms incidents are becoming more common in NZ although handgun ownership in NZ is still illegal except for sports like target pistols. There is a recent movie out called Aramoana (down near Dunedin) where a very similar situation happened some years back involving a firearms incident and a police officer in a very isolated community.

2007-06-02 03:32:00 | Most NZ Police officers patrol unarmed - so the likelihood of something like this happening is quite small. | somebody (208) | |
2007-06-02 03:45:00 | Nearly all NZ cop cars have guns in the boot, and more often then not at least one cop is wearing his when responding to a call out. If its nasty then you can garentee many of them will be armed, I believe that many cars are also fitted with a rifle of some sort. In NZ you are quite likely to get shot dead for smashing windows with a baseball bat. If you touched a cops gun you would already be quite shot.

I think the Police's policy is more of a case of diffuse the situation and ask why than shoot first and ask later. Our cops might be protrayed as heavy handed but from what I have seen of overseas police, out boys and girls in blue have many more restrictions placed on how they are allowed to handle difficult situations or noisy student protests (normally the two most common situations that result in claims against the police). Our cops don't exactly use mobile water cannons and tear gas or fire rubber bullets to disperse student protests. |

2007-06-02 03:59:00 | Fine, Go into town, Start smashing windows until armed police arrive, grab his gun, come back and tell us how it went. Oh wait, The police would have diffused the situation by shooting you dead. And good on them, No need for the cop to be the one who gets hurt. As for student parties, Thats a fantastic idea, Though I'm more for suffocating them with pepper spray.

2007-06-02 04:36:00 | I beg to differ there Metla, although I do agree that a bullet would solve the issue very quickly. I have never known the NZ police to shoot someone for "disturbing the peace" by vandalising public property with a baseball bat or similar weapon. Admittedly they will certainly send in a police dog to take the offender down and then have a number of police officers to "subdue" the offender as required. I think however that the public outcry for simply shooting a person who is armed with a firearm would be huge. Even when a deranged Asian student has just broken up with his girlfriend and is threatening to shoot her new boyfriend, yes the AOS were called in (pic appeared in the NZ Herald), however no person was actually shot as far as I recall-at least not by the Police. As far as I know the only time the police would actually shoot to stop the offender would be in a hostage situation or that Wellington bail escapee that happened a while back in the bush around Upper hut or somewhere where the offender had already shot an innocent bystander.
