555938 2007-06-06 12:48:00 dw, i have no issues with apple's iBrand - it warns the rest of us to stay away :D

On the contrary...
Apple Inc. and its iPhone are set to ride a growing wave of middle-market Americans who are defining a new market segment through their willingness to pay a premium for "new luxury" goods, says a new report from Credit Suisse.

According to the 21-page briefing, a "new luxury" product is one that demonstrates technical superiority, improved functionality, and compels an emotional attachment by its owner. It possess higher levels of quality, taste, and aspiration than other goods in its category, but is not so expensive as to be out of reach.

555939 2007-06-06 13:07:00 Actually the original saying was "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Your one motorbyclist, is more akin to Microsoft. :D Or, if it is too simple, make it more complicated so that your forced to ad a bloated how to wizard to really screw things up then sell it in 8 versions with bits stripped out all the way through at confusing price breaks and then tell everybody that they can have lots of simple choices in order to pick the right one for that "seamless user experience".:p

So that what was once great has now become a total SNAFU.

lol so true

yea, sounds like more marketing dribble to me.

allow me to translate

"people buy stuff that they think will make them look and feel cool, and will pay extra for it"

but is not so expensive as to be out of reach.

of course not everyone goes around buying ferraris and lamborginis because they cost so much - but they still but the evo, the bmw, or put those disgusting 18" chrome spinners on their $500 ****box car:groan:

/me hugs his cheap 2280 He he he, I hear ya! My Nokia 6235 can survive all that and more  has fallen out of my pocket while riding my mountain bike over a concrete jump that was over head hight and phone fell out and landed on the concrete, bounced, jumped and finally skidded to a stop ~25m after hitting the ground (I was going 50kph over the ramp  )

Also has been dropped into water multiple times and still works... Has been left outside overnight with a heavy frost, more falling onto hard grounds... you name it :p

I don't think that there would be too many people who would do that to their iPaqs and eMates or Palm Treos.

555944 2007-06-07 06:40:00 well not deliberately

(and of course more people fall for marketing dribble rather than objective analysis - that's why is works so well and also why some use the term "sheeple")

Because that would be the market that the iPhone is aimed at, regardless of "marketing dribble". Marketing and promotion are required to sell any product. You may have a great product but if people don't know it exists then they won't be buying it regardless.

555946 2007-06-07 08:30:00 Well then they would be useless to a lot of people... and so will the iphone there are a lot of people that I know that go for strength over features... as long as it does the basics is all they want...

I just happen to be hard on things... It is a fact of life :D. and so this is why I don't bother with over priced phones which a cheaper phone will do just about the same things

I'm guessing that the type of phone that I use and the type of phone that you use are quite similar. Mine is just the basic Nokia that has been dropped a couple of times in the 3 or so years that I have had it, it still works fine. The type of customer that will be buying the iPhone will be a person who is a Palm Treo or Blackberry user - someone who is in a somewhat more executive role than you or me or someone who is an on the road sales person rather than someone who needs a basic phone that can handle being dropped or knocked around a bit. The type of person in this market category is someone who won't have a problem with spending $500 US on a phone as long as it does what they want it to do. For that reason with a very large market in the US, I see the iPhone doing very well. I have a problem spending $200 NZ on a phone:eek:
