556864 2007-06-07 10:07:00 If I own a Dairy and you come in with a weapon and want to rob me and I then hit you on the head with a can of cat food and you die. Am I guilty of Murder, Manslaughter or just defending myself and family?
Read the item again. The police accepted that he acted okay in defending himself. He wasn't charged with that. He was charged with possession of a pistol for unlawful purposes. I doubt that even in their wildest police-type moments they could charge you with having a can of cat food for unlawful purposes...... :2cents:

556865 2007-06-07 11:02:00 I'm worried where might this lead? Will petrol stations, convenience stores, takaway food places etc, start keeping loaded guns under the counter?

I thought it was illegal to have a loaded gun under the counter?

it's illegal for any shop other than a gun shop. have a look next time your in one....they have guns everywhere, under the counter, on the counter, on racks, on shelves......and they have ammo to.

at the end of the day its a gunshop full of guns with people who use them. who cares if one is ready just in case, its a normal expectation that robbing a gunshop will get you shot.

i think there was a darwin award for one person in the states who walked past a cop car into a gun shop, fired a shot into he ceiling and demanded money. the cop at the counter shot him, the gun shop owner shot him and 5 other shoppers in the store also shot him !

556867 2007-06-07 21:23:00 The NZ Police don't like loosing these sort of cases so just wait for the police harasment of this guy to start. Spot complience checks on his home and business every week, His cars being stopped at random looking for the slightest thing. The NZ police talking head this morning saying people should not protect them selves in a robery. Tell that to you South Auckland shop owner at 10.00 at nite. If the gun shop owner had not defended himself I wonder how many funerals there would have been for Helen to attend for the victims of the robber once he got his hand on a gun and amo.. paulw (1826)

No opportunity to look like she's on the side of the common man. And crime is an embarrassing topic for a Labour government anyway (especially since their policies - IMHO - are to blame for the high level of crime in NZ anyway). It's much more of a publicity windfall to jump up and down on big business (SOE or not) - since this fits with their underlying philosophy and reason for being!! johcar (6283)
