747074 2009-02-12 04:15:00 Dont use Comodo's AV. Its pretty new / in beta, and probably pretty crappy.

Use Avast Home (free), or NOD32, if you want to pay for it

Use Norton's removal tool, to remove whatever Symantec program/s you had installed

Uninstall all versions of Java, its out of date then update it

Get rid of Google Desktop or disable indexing if there's an option in its settings

Yup and tick the entries Jamuz posted

Dont install more than 1 AV or FW program, they may conflict

And yup, I would uninstall / disable Windows defender, its rubbish

747075 2009-02-12 05:59:00 Thanks Speedy, just installed Comodo's firewall and kept Avast as I was happy with it. Uninstalled Java, Windows Defender and Google Desktop.

A little unsure of what to do with one of the other things you suggested though:

Norton's removal tool? Where do I get it/find it and how do I use it to remove the Symantec program I had installed?

Would a new hijack this log be a good idea? Or should all be fine now?

747076 2009-02-12 06:29:00 Norton Antivirus Removal Tool: solutions.symantec.com

A new HijackThis log would be preferred, thanks. :)
Renmoo (66)
747077 2009-02-12 06:34:00 Slight problem - it asks what Norton product I have and I have no idea - it was probably a trial version of antivirus that came with my computer when I bought it (think that was in 2007) and I have no idea what it is and I don't have a product key that it asks for. What next? Beemer (6956)
747078 2009-02-12 07:07:00 Gee thanks! Now can you tell me how to NOT have crap running in the background because I am sure I'm not doing it on purpose!

Start with msconfig (type into run) .
Untick all the unnecessary stuff, basically all you need in startup is antivirus, firewall and perhaps wireless if you use it .

And using Vista download this:
. winvistaclub . com/uwtf . html" target="_blank">www . winvistaclub . com

Lots of bloat you can disable with it, and its easy, tick boxes, and if something screws up just untick it again, so No worries about anything permanent .

Windows Defender is pointless so kill that too .

Nor do you need these:

747079 2009-02-12 08:13:00 Getting there! I ran msconfig and removed all but Avast, Comodo and Windows program start up functions (thought they would be the ones needed). I have a wireless router but couldn't see anything that said wireless - so hope it still works on my laptop!

I removed the ones you suggested, but couldn't quite figure out what you wanted me to do with the first ones listed - the C ones, without numbers next to them. Some of the others were missing when I went to remove them (may have been on the first hijack this log but have been deleted by now).

Here is an updated hijack this log, run a few minutes ago after a restart. I've noticed some of the things you told me to remove and which I did, have reappeared, such as RoxMedia, Appint, etc. Why does this happen?

747081 2009-02-12 10:09:00 I did uninstall Java and then I went to their website and downloaded what I assumed was the latest version - are you saying it's not? I'll uninstall it again tomorrow and leave it for now.

I also uninstalled Windows Defender, so not sure why that is still there, and I was sure I unticked it in the start up menu.

I shut down the desktop and have been working on the laptop - so if I run hijack this again tomorrow, will it have the same entries as now so I can fix them then?
Beemer (6956)
747082 2009-02-12 10:24:00 The latest version of Java is 6 update 12

Link is below

This is defenders entry in startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

If you havent ticked the previous entries yup they'll still be there tomorrow

You may have ticked them, but did you tick fix checked as well?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
747083 2009-02-12 21:08:00 I think it's slowly working - I went in and removed the ones pctek recommended and now the log file of hijack this is significantly smaller than before. Here it is in case there is still some crap that needs removing! I have noticed that no matter how many times I tick it and then tick fix checked, the Symantec and Install Driver Table Manager (noted here in bold) do not disappear after rebooting.
