Do you have an existing machine you want to install a new operating system on?( need CPU speed, ram, hard drive specs). Do you want to buy a new machine?

556902 2007-06-07 09:37:00 I have been reading that XP is better at games than vista with a faster framerate.

enthusiast.hardocp.com Well yes, XP is better at gaming than Vista... BUT AFAIK that is ONLY because of the GFX drivers not being up to the same performance standard on Vista as they are on XP... and with DX10 games arriving and DX10 ONLY running on Vista, Vista still might be an option for gamers if they can put up with lower FPS and settings for a while... till the drivers are better...

I am considering an upgrade to DX10... and an 8800GTX (unless something better comes up before I get it!) which means... 8800GTX ~$1100 Windows Vista Ultimate ~$800 new case to fit the 8800GTX... ~$500 seeing the amazingness of DX10 first hand... Priceless :D

556904 2007-06-08 11:55:00 I am having XP and provides best performance till now. So it is better to go for Win XP. Different XP Edition are available at [edited] . I , himself purchased XP from [edited] Arthur William (12380)
556905 2007-06-08 13:01:00 Don't go for vista, just yet!! Give it a few years...

You may find any older programs you have, or even some older hardware might not run.

If you have old stuff and want vista, get them to install it for you before you buy it. (if the shop doesn't or can't install it you are buying your compter from the wrong place to start off with)

Otherwise XP professional will be around for a long time yet.

Go Vista Home Premium if you have a new computer - never had any issues with it.

Apart from installing it that is!!!!!!!

I think that would be ideal advice for Willie. ;)

Apart from installing it that is!!!!!!!I you have issues installing it (and you're a not so new user) then a new user is definitely going to find it nigh on impossible to install.
Personally, I'd tell Willie to stick with a more reliable and proven operating system (no, I'm not saying Linux :p) and go with Windows XP (home or Pro, preferably Pro)

556908 2007-06-08 23:35:00 I'm amazed. Not a soul has mentioned Linux.

XP home, of course.
