556891 2007-06-07 06:19:00 Well, what would you like to do? Email, photo editing, instant messaging..
Give us a few details.

Windows XP Home is alright.
The free but technical alternative is Linux, not so user friendly for beginners.

556892 2007-06-07 06:20:00 Welcome to PressF1.

Can you be more specific about what your needs are? What would you like to use your computer for? We can't help you unless you give us more information.

Do you spend a lot of time gaming or dealing with multimedia like music, photos, video and emails and stuff or a combination of both?

556894 2007-06-07 06:24:00 Win2K or WinXP, Apple comps are expensive. zqwerty (97)
556895 2007-06-07 06:32:00 It all depends on your hardware as to what your PC is capable of running.
If its fairly modern XP will work, if its as old as the hills it probably doesn't have enough grunt or HDD space.

556896 2007-06-07 07:08:00 If it has heaps of power go for Vista. Don't get Home Basic though. pcuser42 (130)
556897 2007-06-07 07:21:00 Don't go for vista, just yet!! Give it a few years...

You may find any older programs you have, or even some older hardware might not run.

If you have old stuff and want vista, get them to install it for you before you buy it. (if the shop doesn't or can't install it you are buying your compter from the wrong place to start off with)

Otherwise XP professional will be around for a long time yet.
