556258 2007-06-05 05:27:00 Is an extended warranty on an LCD TV necessary and a good investment?.
Opinions appreciated.

556259 2007-06-05 05:41:00 Well if u have to pay extra no .

Like the Consumers institute said on Good morning this morning or yesterday .

Dont bother . Its really a waste of money (if u have to pay for it) .

If its only a yr or so from wherever you brought it from .

Look on the manufacturer's site, and see what the real warranty is .

556260 2007-06-05 06:07:00 As Speedy said no. You are protected by the Consumers Guarantees Act.

556261 2007-06-05 06:09:00 The Sony warranty is for one year but an additional 4 years is available for an extra $330.
How reliable are these TV's?. My old CRT TV just keeps going on and on but will the LCD's do the same I wonder?.

As Trev states above, given the price of a Sony LCD TV (and the supposed premium of the brand) the CGA should easily protect you for five years.

556263 2007-06-05 06:21:00 A CRT will go for a long time. An LCD should too, but the LCD can have pixels dropping out, while still working. That's what the extended guarantees cover, usually. Graham L (2)

Generally I agree with the above that its a scam, but it also depends on what you have in the way of contents insurance which may already cover some events.

I have never taken out the added insurance, but one laptop here has the extra cover as the vendor threw it in as part of the negotiation to get the sale.

I am not sure it would cover that because the initial guarantee doesn't cover dud pixels as with most manufacturers so perhaps the extra warranty would be overkill.

Thanks godfather. That has given me food for thought.

556267 2007-06-05 07:01:00 A mate bought a Panasonic projector about 3 years ago.
It was quite expensive at $3000.
He also got the extended 5 year warranty from Harvey Norman for another $300.

A couple of weeks ago it started playing up - like a lot of the pixels had got stuck on blue so had blue specs everywhere.
He took it back and they replaced it with a brand new model which is worth $4,000. The new projector blows the old one away for brightness, colour, clarity etc.
If he had not had the extended warranty either he would have had to pay to get it fixed (quoted about $1800) or if he had been able to use the consumer guarantees act then they would have just repaired it.
So sometimes it can be worth it for the extended warranty.
