| 747963 | 2009-02-14 20:31:00 | Whats involved in hooking up a Laptop drive to a PC to clone the Laptop Drive partitions? It is an IDE 60Gb drive. I have one of these gismos (USB IDE Adapter Cable, Support 2.5" 3.5" 5.25" IDE ) www.trademe.co.nz It plugs into the Laptop Drive and into USB but does not show up in My Computer There seems to be no way to power it up either unless USB is supposed to power it. |

I have a similar device to that Bantu, but mine does SATA as well. It should get power from the USB for a laptop HDD, if not then try another USB port. IT won't show up in My Computer if it is not powered up :D If it still won't power up you may need to get a USB cable that has two connectors on one end so you can plug it into two USB ports on a comptuer to get the extra power. Something like this: www.cdynamics.co.nz |

Maybe I can clone the drive via the Network with True Image, never tried it before. I tried a few different USB Ports. I hear the USB ding dong noise when it connects, just no sign of it showing up. |

Maybe needs to have a drive letter assigned or is using one that is already being used by something else? Can you hear the drive spin up when you plug it in? |

| 747969 | 2009-02-14 20:51:00 | Can you hear the drive spin up when you plug it in? No, because the a**hole next door is mowing his lawns at this inappropriate moment:-) Will check that when he is done. I think it is though. WOW Disk Management wants to Initilize it:-( I don't want it formatted thats for sure. It has XP installed on it and currently works fine in the Laptop, I just want to clone the 2 HDD Partitions then upgrade the HDD size hopefully without loosing anything, particularly the Restore Partition. |

| 747970 | 2009-02-14 21:06:00 | Make sure you plug it into the rear USB ports mine won't work in the front ones even though it spins up, have no idea why though, maybe because front ones all share the same power and the rear are individually powered | gary67 (56) | ||

| 747972 | 2009-02-14 21:15:00 | Many of the USB ones can cause problems - these here (www.pcssl.co.nz) as shown from this shop are what I use ( I dont get them from shops, one of my vendors has them) - never failed, and the laptop drive simply shows as separate drive. -- The device is similar to the one Speedy linked. | wainuitech (129) | ||
