747572 2009-02-13 09:29:00 Hi,

I recently embarked on cleaning the dust out of my pc. I do this about every 2 months. I noticed a large amount of dust in the fan of my graphics card (nvidia 8800GT) so removed it from the case and very gentlely got most of the dust out with dry cotton buds. I then replaced the card and case door. I now notice however that the fan on the card no longer spins and the card overheats.

I considered several ideas to try an get it going again;
1) I recently upgraded to the stereoscopic drivers and 3D support from Nvidia. I uninstalled all of these, and re-installed a completely fresh latest driver for this card from nvida. As anticipated... still no fan spin.
2) I removed the card, checked that the fan was free to move and checked all the plugs. I made sure the card was put back firmly into the motherboard pci-e slots. Still no fan spin.
3) There is a loose connector plug that comes off the main power plug to the card. It is a two pin plug, however I cannot see anywhere to plug this in on the card and don't remember taking is out of anywhere when I removed the card first time round.

Any help on this issue would be much appreciated. :help:

747573 2009-02-13 09:47:00 Are you sure you got the power plug for the card right - normally its a six pin plug. Either on the rear of the card or on the top.

Edited:
Your card may be different to One shown here (www.techarp.com) but look at the bottom left picture of the four shown - it shows the power socket.

PS: Welcome to PF1 :)

747574 2009-02-13 11:00:00 Hi Wainuitech,

Yes, 6 pin plug is connected and clipped into place. The fan spins freely with gentle push with a cotton bud when off.

After reading the info in the link you suggested, I think it may have been an sli plug from the psu that has 2 pins and extends off the 6 pin main plug for the card.

Unfortunatly, the fan is still not working...

747575 2009-02-14 01:31:00 Took the card into several computer stores in Wellington today. Their service center verdicts were that the card is stuffed. Apparently supposed to use compressed air to clean the dust off things like these... not cotton buds (I guess it makes sense in terms of anti-static). Bugger!

The funny thing is, they could feel the fan wanting to turn...but that there was something impeding it's rotation. I was hoping all it would be something simple and fixable. hmmm..... not sure that I have the right tools to take the casing off and find out though.

Anyway, I now have a spare 8800GT. I got frustrated and purchased another card (9800GTX+). www.c1com.co.nz are great!

I would still be interested in finding a solution to this card fan problem if there is one. Would be keen to put it in a second machine... Any ideas welcome :)

747576 2009-02-14 01:57:00 First thing I would do, is remove the cover from the card (if it has one like pictured) unplug the original fan, attach another similar or same fan to the card, fire it up - if the fan spins up  then remove the original fan from the card and replace it - making sure you use thermal paste between the fan base/Chipset. wainuitech (129)
747577 2009-02-14 06:01:00 Hey again,

I managed to get the case off and had a look inside. There's a lot of screws on it huh! Once inside I found the plug for the fan and checked this was securely plugged in - I then replaced the casing and turned it on - still no fan spin. Maybe one of the bearings has gone?

Thanks for the suggestion to try another fan. I'll give this a go. Any ideas who might stock something like this? Is it a specialist high speed one or would a standard fan about the same size do the trick?

Thanks again for your help on this issue Wainuitech. Much appreciated!

747578 2009-02-14 06:04:00 Looks like you are in Wellington - try Quay Computers, they carry a lot of parts etc - talk to the guys out back in the service department, not the shop front.

Pays to have the right Fan - I know when any of my customers have faulty fans, its a case of remove the fan then track one down from my suppliers.

Edit: was going to PM you with a person to ask for at Quays but I see you have disabled that in your Profile.:crying

747579 2009-02-14 08:37:00 Took the card into several computer stores in Wellington today. Their service center verdicts were that the card is stuffed.

Thats a bit lame. If its stuffed then it doesn't hurt to dismantle it and chesk it properly.

Could be you just pushed some fluff right into the fan itself or something.

Unlikely to die just like that.

I once broke off a large capacitor on my very expensive card, took it aprt totally, carefully soldered it back on, cleaned up the thermal paste mess that resulted, reassembled it and oh look! It worked!

747580 2009-02-17 22:31:00 Hi

Sorry bout the PM thing... I'm new to this forum so I'll try and locate how to turn that function on

Hmmm, I've done a bit of googling, and from what I can see the card may still have life in it yet :banana Kinda nice seeing as a new one of these is about $450. I paid $440 for the 9800GTX+ which should arrive this week. In the mean time, I'm still pretty keen to get the 8800 going.

I found these parts that I think might do the trick.
Option 1:
www.ascent.co.nz
+
www.ascent.co.nz (not sure if this should be a case fan or a cpu type fan...???)

Option 2:
www.ascent.co.nz
+
www.ascent.co.nz

And then there is just a bit of thermal paste to stick it all together.
What do you guys think?

p.s. thanks for your comments and thoughts on this problem.
