558266 2007-06-11 22:20:00 Antitrust officials may demand that Microsoft Corp. change its Windows Vista operating system to address a complaint that the program's design hurts competing software. Google Inc. used a 50-page white paper to spell out its claims that Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Vista violates a 2002 antitrust settlement, The Wall Street Journal reported today. According to the Journal, Google sent the white paper to federal and state antitrust officials in April as part of its campaign to convince prosecutors that Vista makes it difficult for consumers to use rival desktop search software. Google distributes PC search and indexing software in its Google Desktop program. -- June 11, 2007 (Computerworld) www.computerworld.com Morpheus1 (186)
558267 2007-06-12 01:30:00 For once I would side with Microsoft here. While Google is the market leader in Web searching, MS should have the right to build in core features such as search functions into their operating system distribution and user interface without people complaining about not being able to replace them. If you want an extensible operating system, use a modular *nix OS.

People need to find a way to crack the Microsoft monopoly, not make excuses and engage in delusions of having some right to profit from it.

558268 2007-06-12 13:09:00 yeah, while i hate microsoft for effectively imitating osx and constantly trying to crush competition, it IS their sofware and we DO have a choice, for the most part, as to whether or not we buy it.

just look at vista sales in china - MS was trying to charge a months wages for it, sure enough everyone went for the $1 pirate versions:D

same thing is happening with all their DRM bull$hit, cracks are becoming available that rid vista of that and some i hear actually speed things up.

point being it's microsoft's loss: if they want to keep driving users to apple like they have been IE users to firefox it's their choice to do so.

558269 2007-06-12 15:37:00 That isn't the way the European courts saw it a few years ago....remember the WMP blow-up?

It had been included in the package, was primarily associative with media files (as M$ wanted it to do) and yet it was deemed anti-competitive and made M$ remove it as a package deal.

558271 2007-06-13 02:49:00 very little choice?

except for mac and/or linux - it's not like they're in short demand and they both work fine, well mac does, in the home environment.

mac is useless for a gamer or someone who want's to run software outside the narrow apple scope, linux is hopeless for the average user, and windows is the one that sits in the middle. sure they try to squish other rivals out, and sure it's a pain in the ass for consumers, but it's standard business practice. we can support it or not.

hell if you don't want to pay for windows but want to use it just go download, i mean, uh, "aquire" a version that conveiniently works without activation nor DRM crap.

558273 2007-06-13 03:09:00 lol i know, even though i did say that mac is fine for everyone else, and that i'm right and they can't deny it, they'll still spew forth apple advertising ad infinitum. motorbyclist (188)
