557875 2007-06-12 17:45:00 The new Huntly e3p plant just being commissioned is 385 MW capacity, this is giving many headaches as it is almost "too much in one place", if it trips, the resultant loss can cause blackouts in the area if planning is less than optimum.

Fortunately we have some short run-up generation that can take over quite quickly in the top half of the NI.

However even a 600 MW nuclear plant could be "far too much in one place" unless it was backed by a different technology fast recovery plant, Nuclear has a comparatively long time to run up to full output compared to hydro or geothermal.

You have to look at the entire picture of the national grid, we are a small country with a wide spread of load centres.

Wind farms have to rely on other generation also being available, if the wind slows the power output falls. They are more a saving in storage in hydro than a primary power source. You cannot guarantee the output in any one location 24/7.

Just a question of someone with half a brain, runnig conventional and nuclear in conjunction,I know that is asking a lot.

permits.

Most humbly, I agree..but there are always new people who log on after registering and it's nice to have fresh thoughts and ideas being brought to the fore.

Seeing that I too have not seen this thread mentioned, I found the reading good and if not highly technical, at least a cause to be chatted.

And...if all is said, the site has been a little quiet lately..what with youse guys being snowed in and penguins running all over the city and streets. I know..I see the travel brochures that tells tourists to stay away from NZ at "that time" of the year.and since this well-kept secret is now known; my heart goes out to youse for the influx of fish-eating, fish-pooping flightless birds.

557877 2007-06-12 18:58:00 Did I say that? Nuclear reactors these days are highly safe, clean and efficient. You've still not provided a suitable alternative energy source

...just don't buy one with the Chernobyl Seal Of Approval.

557878 2007-06-12 19:04:00 When one considers these simple facts, Nuclear Energy, is the logical answer in the long term .

. . and France has gone almost all-nuc . . they are even selling power to the rest of the Euro nations too .

Before someone says that they would not mind Franceland going "poof" anyway, just think . . . if they trust nuclear generation to people whose women don't shave and they wear berets and stripped turtleneck shirts and quote Pierre de Bocosel de Chastelard, then it should work for a thinking nation . . . whomever a "thinking nation" might be, don't ask .
