558150 2007-06-12 05:22:00 If you want to have a laugh about pronunciation, I know someone who pronounces compromise as two words (com and promise), generic with a hard "g", rather than "jeneric", and "momentary" as "momm.entery" rather than "moh.mentary". I know there are lots of different emphases in language, but when I hear this guy speak (a "civic leader"), it sounds more like a guy who's read the words but hasn't heard them spoken, or has heard them spoken but his brain hasn't connected the spoken word with the written word. Like Cervical for instance? Every time time they say that it makes me want to scream.

As in do not Diss me? In my opinion certain words are invented as time goes on. I wonder how the Maori invented a word for a computer. This concerns me as well.

I guess the main thing with language is to communicate.

If I say "I love you." This will carry a different meaning to me saying, " I like you." Two four letter words. The word "love" to me implies commitment whereas the word "like" is different.

And I will NOT live in or visit Whanganui. Nor will I climb Mount Taranaki. 		Sweep (90)

What a load of Bull####. The name of anyplace is pronounced the way the residents want.And it generally is. Case in point .. Otumoetai in Tauranga, the locals say O too mo tie, if you asked them where 'Aw too moy (rhymes with boy) tie' was they couldn't tell you (even although it is the correct pronounciation of the word in Te Reo Maori)


Heard on TV last night , Waitemata pronounced Y T Mata.Correct, whats wrong with that?

The "tow" rhymes with "how" as oppossed to toe.

Theatre to me is on a stage.

So if I used Te reo maori and while discussing with a Maori "Punch and Judy" on TV I should include words like "box"? Punch may be used to include hitting a person with a fist which is a closed hand. A slap uses an open hand. A smack is an open hand. Hmmm. What is the difference between a smack or a slap? 		Sweep (90)

Another example is in Zulu; The Zulu had no written form for the word electricity (nor any knowledge of it). Along came the whites who introduced gas power. In turn they introduced electricity. Today the Zulu word for electricity is egezi, pronounced e-geh-zee. Wonderful in its simplicity. 		Greg (193)
