558099 2007-06-16 03:03:00 Gonna try that after dinner tonight..stand by to help later....Audacity? Well i'll refine my advice then.

File > open > usual_story, pick a file, any file, or maybe the one you want.

Allow a few seconds for audacity to import it
Look at that, isn't that pretty? That's your chosen audio file all laid out as Left channel, and Right channel, ready for you to edit, or just plain......

file > Export as (you pick*)

*Of course your options may vary depending on what set up you have. I have no idea how it works with windows, but here in *nix land the export options are only there if the system already had certain libs prior to installation. I can export as .mp3, .wav, or my fav: .ogg. You.... well, your about to find out :)

Before you export, and while you have Audacity open, it may be a good time to trim that annoying few seconds of dead space of the end of a song, or add some more, whatever squeals yer wheels :)

558100 2007-06-16 03:13:00 That sounds easy enough..Gonna get some cake and ice cream with Jamaican coffee for dessert..so it won't be long now. SurferJoe46 (51)
558101 2007-06-16 03:29:00 WOW! It's doing it all right now...Thanks personthingy..I am even adding a second track to it for the dual channels...you can mix a second track pretty easily in Audacity.

This is territory that I have not explored yet.....again, thanks a lot! :)

Audacity is just amazing, and I haven't even scratched the surface of it's abilities yet.

In very simple layman's terms, just what is "ogg"? I know it's another extension but I am swamped with techno-jargon by the FAQ's on it.

An . ogg, or "ogg vorbis" file is another way of saving an audio file in a way that is somewhat smaller than the somewhat raw, huge, and uncompressed . wav file .

Opinions vary as to which is the better option, but in my humble opinion, . oggs are just plain better than mp3s . They are also a truly open source thing, and therefore no royalty need to be paid should someone create a device that plays them . This is why suse-linix's latest offerings don't have the libs that play mp3s they cannot offer them without having to pay a royalty . O)f course mp3 players are more standard, but this too is changing .

Where possible, i save all new music as an . ogg for my system, and will no dought flash an ipod, or something similar at some stage for my trucks audio player .

/me likes . oggs :)

558103 2007-06-16 04:17:00 Is ogg as a file system smaller than mp3 for the same file? SurferJoe46 (51)
558104 2007-06-16 04:21:00 Is ogg as a file system smaller than mp3 for the same file?Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
They're pretty close on that one, and of course the issue is further clouded by differing sample rates and so forth....

I'll stress that this is my opinion, but i think, as a rule .oggs just sound that little bit better, particularly cleaner bass.

558105 2007-06-16 04:30:00 I am experimenting right this moment with smaller sample rates and 8- 16- 32-bit floats...I have no idea what a FLOAT is...but I'll dink around with it and see. SurferJoe46 (51)

Agreed . As is often debated on Slashdot, . ogg is waaay better than mp3

558107 2007-06-16 04:39:00 PS Do you have ANY idea how small those SD-Micros are?

Really tiny! So small that I can put 3 of them on my pinkie fingernail . (Ooops . . that MIGHT not translate too NZ-speak . . it's the smallest finger on your hand; furthest away from the thumb . )

Experiment done on the bit-rate . . . at 16-bit float the file is just 33,903,243 bytes, the 32-bit float rate is 33,943,553 bytes . . . not much difference .

OK..that raises a question then...

If I save and send files that are ogg, can the average person play them in WMP?
