| 558756 | 2007-06-14 06:37:00 | I'm amazed at the invective directed towards Helen Clark - I'm no apologist for her but take account of the facts - she's stood up to the major powers over such things as Iraq, she's brought the NZ economy back to some reality, she's lowered the unemployment rate to the lowest for many years - any many others. For those that want a Conservative govt - just remember the definition of such an animal - do nothing. Can anyone tell me what National stands for (ie policies) on anything other than that which will get them into power. So tell me - how will you be better off under National? |

All I'm saying is that her making the gesture of meeting him is great, and if I were in her position I would go and speak to him too, but it still doesn't address my comment regarding the NZ goverment dodging "official" meetings with people the Chinese government doesn't want our politicians meeting with. For instance, Winston Peters is meeting with him in the capacity of the "Leader of NZ First", rather than "Foreign Minister". Late last year they cancelled a visit by Taiwanese MPs because the Chinese embassy said they "disapproved" of the NZ government having an informal meeting. NZ stood up to powerful countries in the past (e.g. not following Bush into Iraq), and is something we should continue doing to show our values and beliefs. So tell me - how will you be better off under National? To be honest, I don't think it'll make the slightest bit of difference with the particular issue I'm commenting on here. That doesn't remove my right to make an observation on the status quo however. |

That was because they didn't want to upset the US government, which has no more claim to legitimacy than the Chinese). | Graham L (2) | ||
| 558759 | 2007-06-14 07:09:00 | Which party will be best to vote for in next years elections? Based on all the parties performances in this decade, it is a real shame that the McGillicudy Serious Party have stopped putting up people for election to parliament. They had some sound ideas compared to all the incumbent members. Ken |

There are aspects of Australia that leave a lot to be desired, but on the overall balance, Australia wins out over New Zealand under its current administration. Its been several years that I have thought of moving to Australia and I'm getting closer to actually going. Similar to Rob, I have family restrictions that have made it difficult. No country is perfect and it may be the grass is greener view but I'm going to give it a try, hopefully this year. As to the Dalai Lama subject of this thread, I applaud Oz for doing that but in the same breath I will say that - and I hate to admit this - that I hesitantly agreed with Helen Clarke and her mates for bowing to the Chinese regarding Taiwan and Falun Gulan issues. Why? Because of the economy. We are so small and vulnerable, so we need all the Chinese exports we can get. |
