2007-06-10 00:39:00 | What bothers me is that so many sites ONLY allow iTunes. You are right Morpheus in that it is a successful marketing ploy adapted companies or schools that allows them to ride on the coat tails of the 800 pound iTunes gorilla. From a popularity and hi web traffic point of view it makes good marketing sense to associate your product or podcast with either iTunes or the iPod, especially in the US where Duke University is located since about 50% or more of the students there are iPod/iTunes users. Both Duke and Princeton have a deal with Apple to provide legal downloads to their students where the college gets about 1 or 2 cents "commission" from each track purchased. Both Napster and Real Networks have similar subscription deals going with other US universities, although I believe that the iTunes one is the most popular with the majority of the students. Just about every promo on TV or in print these days that wants to appeal to the majority will use an iPod as a promo giveaway from everything to AA rewards points, The Warehouse, Amex, The NZ Herald etc. It wouldn't be much point using a Zune or a Dell DJ or Creative Muvo would it? Fortunately if you don't like iTunes you can always try something else. :)

2007-06-10 00:43:00 | ... iTunes is free to download and comes bundled with the latest version of Quicktime. And for this reason I will never download another version of iTunes (aside from the SIZE of the sucker!!) There are plenty of good media players out there without, to paraphrase Metla, installing the travesty that is Quicktime. It's just too damn intrusive!! And not obvious to switch off either!

Well they are both free and can be uninstalled if you don't like them unlike some media players. I think however that future downloads from YouTube may require Quicktime or something similar since Youtube is replacing its Adobe Flash codec with the H.264 codec which is in Quicktime. |

2007-06-10 01:03:00 | Here are some sites that require iTunes and without iTunes you cannot even browse the podcasts: www.oculture.com www.duke.edu This is a page with xml links: www.productivity501.com This is the sort of page I like because it has direct mp3 downloads or other formats: uc.princeton.edu What bothers me is that so many sites ONLY allow iTunes. What is the sense in this? It in effect pushes people into buying an iPod. W*T*F_*? If iPods can play any mp3 file then why not just have all podcasts as straight no-nonsense mp3 files? Looks to me that Apple is the same as M$ in making people buy their products and it pisses me off. My guess is that any site that only has iTunes for podcasts gets a nice fat $$ kickback - why else would they bother or maybe too many users are too thick to know how to download without a fancy interface? Metla, lets see how long it takes WinMacGuy to counter what I am saying and to add some other bs about how much better iTunes/Apple is. I'm glad you, MacH8er and others are here to expose this bs. I could download some from "open culture" without itunes. Did this by going to the feed link or by going directly to there website. None from duke

2007-06-10 04:03:00 | Well I tried songbird, very familiar interface as itunes, to be able to access the itunes only podcasts you have to access the itunes music store, which I couldn't figure out to do in songbird. So still doesn't solve the problem.
