748857 2009-02-17 23:53:00 Hey people,

I have a machine here that is really doing my head in.

It is an older AMD XP 3400+ on a Gigabyte mobo with NForce3 chipset.

The problem is that the onboard NIC won't get an IP from the DHCP server and if I put in one manually it still won't work.
Everything looks OK in Device Manager & no errors in event logs.
The network connection says that no bytes have been transmitted or received.

I have removed all drivers, run a driver clean removal tool, reset ip via cmd, run winsockXP fix, downloaded and installed latested drivers from nVidia.
The weird thing is it was working fine last night, I shut it down and went home, came in this morning and booted it up and it wasn't working.
No Windows Updates were installed while shutting down.

748858 2009-02-17 23:58:00 Could have simply failed - It does happen some times.

Easiest way I have found to test things like this is first find out, is it hardware or software ???

Boot from a Linux live CD - it should pick up the Ethernet connection OK - if the connection / Internet is working OK from the CD - Then you know its software - if Not Its a Hard Ware problem.

Once you locate where the actual fault is then you start looking at fixes - no point in trying to fix damaged / blocked software if the hardware has died.

Just trying with Ultimate Boot CD and it is having the same problem.

Just found an Ubuntu CD so booting that up now.

748861 2009-02-18 00:44:00 One other thing if its not getting any data - theres a off chance the Ethernet cable is damaged - tried changing that ??? wainuitech (129)
748862 2009-02-18 00:47:00 It's working again! :banana

I shut it down and cleared the CMOS with the jumper on the mobo.
Restarted, reconfigured the BIOS settings and loaded Windows and it worked.
Weird...
