559292 2007-06-14 21:43:00 Hi all,

I know this is a similar post to the one about satellite broadband, but i didn't want to hijack that post:rolleyes:

Does anyone know if it's possible to set up the dish (old sky dish maybe??), cabling and set top box for F.T.A.T.V. without professional assistance? (and a very limited knowledge of that type of thing). I would really like to watch the rugby world cup, but as I have just built the PC in my sig I am a tad strapped for cash!!!!

Thanks in advance!! :D

559293 2007-06-15 00:03:00 The answer is probably yes. I have just been looking into this stuff and there is a lot of info available. Just google for 'freeview nz' for example. linw (53)

559295 2007-06-15 03:23:00 wratterus it can't be too hard. I met a bloke at a campsite at easter he had a sat dish and decoder he got off trademe and a sat finder. He had the sat dish sort of on skids sitting outside his caravan and he was picking up sat tv there no problem and with a splitter feeding to a second caravan as well. Bantu (52)
559296 2007-06-15 03:36:00 cheers bantu, i've seen a setup similar to that aswell somewhere.. from looking around TM it looks as if someone can get themselves set up (dish, mounts, sat finder, cabling, set top box) for under $350 if you do it right. Thanks:thumbs: wratterus (105)
559297 2007-06-15 04:04:00 I have recently put up a freeview dish, LNB and installed a decoder.

I found I needed a satellite finder (under $60) but a really good compass would work, just be a bit frustrating the first time. Once the signal is found, tweaking is easy.

Which decoder did you get? does channel 3 work properly in widescreen? I've heard that some cheaper decoders tend to struggle to reproduce widescreen properly. Cheers:)

559299 2007-06-15 05:34:00 I got a 'Shinestar' el cheapo box.... works fine, widescreen no problem. The epg seems to be a bit basic- can't figure out how to get a whole week's programs.

I already had a Sky dish, so just plugged it in and away it went.

Maybe you could get the Sky guy over to install the dish and just tell them you don't want the rest of the crap :D

Just used the basic DSE box, and as this is at my remote coastal cottage there is no widescreen TV to test it with.
