559258 2007-06-16 08:04:00 I don't see anything wrong with mac
just that some programs I use simply doesn't have a mac alternative

go to doom9.org and find the tools you need to play around with video
and lots of them don't have a mac counterpart
which is kinda sad and an annoyance to my mac friend who wants to try some of that stuff

and my mac friends say their system is more stable and works well
..but if you think about how windows have to work on any weird combination of hardware we put together.. can't exactly blame it to screw up more often than mac
where you can test your software on a limited number of hardware configurations

yea..just my thoughts
Just out of interest, what sort of software is your mate looking for that he can't find

559259 2007-06-16 08:10:00 That will happen to any computer that you drop coffee on regardless of colour.
It sounds much like the rest of us in that your always going to have some part of your job that you don't enjoy unless you can set yourself up doing only what you want to do. It's a fact of life. At 18 I would say you have plenty of room to decide where you want your future to go.

what about black? :D

i don't see how aesthetics is an issue considering the seemingly endless variety of different pc cases. speaking of which, if your mac is built into your monitor, what happens if you want a bigger monitor. not just a simple "go out and buy one" process is it?

I realize that MACH8R is only ever going to tolerate the Macs that he deals with during the day, all I am saying is that regardless off what he thinks of the platform he had better suck it in and get used to it because the Mac platform is here to stay. That means that they will become more common in the work place and schools whether he likes it or not. blah blah mac marketing

didn't microsoft bail you guys out a little while ago?

How bigger a monitor do you want?
Your choices are;
20inch and 24inch in the iMac range and up to 30 inch free standing Mac Monitor if your bank balance will allow.You can also buy any other brand of monitor that you want and plug your Mac in just fine including doing a dual monitor set up which is not uncommon when editing video.

As for the crack about Bill Gates investing $150 Million US in Apple and agreeing to continue developing IE for the Mac back in 1997, that is old news. Microsoft sold the shares not long after and got a very good return on their investment.
Apple currently has about $12 Billion US cash in the bank and no debt.

Apple's strong suit is in editing DV and HDDV so there should be something suitable. It may just be a matter of asking a Mac video editor what they use since many of them have their favourites. The common ones are in the Final Cut Pro Studio area, but there should be other 3rd party add ons.

559265 2007-06-16 10:03:00 What would be a good .html editor for a mac?

We ended up tweaking the website in some program that seemed to be the mac equivalent of notepad..
Tad tedious, that was.

Try BBEdit (www.barebones.com), TextMate (macromates.com/) or SubEthaEdit (http:) for text editors. For WYSIWYG, GoLive or Dreamweaver. :)

Edit: You were probably using TextEdit, which is essentially the Mac equivalent of Notepad.

559266 2007-06-16 10:17:00 Heh, games on a mini mac . :lol:

The problem is that Apple doesn't have a cheap mac in a tower case .
The mini mac isn't upgradeable (and I have to use a putty knife to take the damn things apart just to put in extra RAM or retrieve the hard drive) . The Mac Pro is way too dear and the iMac isn't upgradeable too .

All seem weird to worry about OS X itself as a platform when you could boot into XP/Vista . :rolleyes:

No argument in the gaming department regarding the lack of suitable hardware or upgrade ability. Apple still has a very long way to go if it wants to get PC gamers onto the Mac platform, and that is something that has been commented on by Mac gamers as well. A lot of the issues are discussed in this article;
Bridging the Mac-Windows Gaming Gap
New developments announced at Apple's Developers Conference take different approaches to getting games to run on both platforms
It's hard for Mac users to be into computer games.

Whenever there's been a popular title that runs on Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows operating system, Mac users have always had to wait—and wait and wait— until someone decided there might be enough demand, given the smaller market, to make a profit on an adapted version for Apple's (AAPL) Macintosh platform.

Resigned to this fate, many Mac users have bought a Sony (SNE) PlayStation or Xbox system, or even a Windows computer to devote to games. Ultimately, I bought a Windows machine. I told that story in this space a year ago (see BusinessWeek.com, 6/1/06, "Apple Needs to Get Its Game On"), expressing hope for change.
