749188 2009-02-19 08:21:00 Mine does appear to delete them once they are in Outlook, so no joy there and can't see any option to "leave on server once downloaded" - I am sure there is one if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I've successfully done a backup to my external hard drive (the first one failed for some reason) but there appear to be three folders of backups on the drive, and when I open each, there are heaps of zipped folders with weird stuff in them! How on earth would I find, say, my emails, if I was dumb enough to do this again?

And when I do another backup in a week, will it overwrite the current backup or will I have to delete that after the new one is completed?

749189 2009-02-19 08:30:00 Good thing about a gmail account is that you can set it to never delete incoming emails. I pop my emails from gmail into Thunderbird but they then get archived in the great server in the sky. linw (53)
749190 2009-02-19 08:39:00 Won't help this time, I recommend this (www.microsoft.com) to save your bacon next time, if you're running Outlook 2002 or later...

I have been able to completely restablish emails and email rules, contacts and calendar items by using the backup file...

749191 2009-02-19 08:41:00 I just had a fiddle around with Outlook and found an option in the email accounts section to leave a copy of emails on the server. So I'm going to do that from now on, just to be safe! You can choose to remove them when they are deleted from the deleted items folder, or after a certain number of days, so I'll alter that to a set number of days once I am a bit more disciplined about saving what needs to be saved!

Any info about the backups yet? That would be appreciated.

749192 2009-02-19 08:54:00 Backing up the PST file - found This here (office.microsoft.com) from MS - just tried it on Office 07  worked niceeeeeee - After you install it, you go to File/Backup then on the options Button you select the number of days ( daily is good) and the location - just sent it to one of my servers out in the workshop Backup Settings (www.imagef1.net.nz) :banana

Set it to daily - Backs up when you close the Mail for the first time by the looks of it.

Set this - and the worst (hopefully) you will lose only 1 days worth.

Normally I just use WHS to back up the complete PC nightly - which takes the mail along with it, but now I got the mail as well separate, on my old PC I used back up various items with another program as well (this ones new at Xmas)

In Outlook I use file export to make a backup.pst file which includes all items and sub folders and addresses plus calendar depending on what I select. Vista64 bit and Outlook 2007. I can also backup my archives in a similar manner.

What software do you use to do a backup and to what media? Is it verified after burning?

I have no idea what you use to backup.

I do not know what you do for a backup or copy or what software you use to do this.

This is in Office 07, but from memory 03 is the same, open your mail--- Tools/Options/Mail Setup/Email Accounts/Change/ More Setting Button/ Advanced Tab/ Tick box - leave a copy on server - set number of days if you wish.

Edited: just looked on the Better halfs PC outlook 03 is the same, just the wording slightly different - but close enough to follow.

 Should have looked at Johcars link -oops - same back up program:o

Doesn't hurt to have it linked to twice: it's a damn good wee add-on!!

749196 2009-02-19 10:48:00 If you were in Inbox and did a Ctrl -A and then hit Delete, then all emails should still be in the trash icon (deleted items) ? Unless you did a Shift + Delete .. ? SKT174 (1319)
749197 2009-02-19 18:48:00 I use the Microsoft Backup tool to remind me every 2nd day to backup Outlook 2003,which is done to D drive. It's a handy tool.
Also use Second Copy to copy the pst files to D and E drives. And that runs more than once a day.
So any backup tool would work for that.If you have another drive/partition of course.
