2009-02-19 01:36:00 | And that moron was me! I was deleting some old emails and thought I was in the deleted folder so I did a control A and then hit delete... and then noticed I was in the inbox. There are some important emails in there, so I'd really like to know if I can recover them. I am using Outlook and went into Tools and Find and did a search in the inbox and it came up with heaps of emails. I then did a Control C and clicked on Move to folder and chose Inbox. There are now heaps of emails in my inbox, but all my other folders (Keep, Freelance Work, Trade Me, etc) are all empty. I thought perhaps ALL the emails from ALL the folders had ended up in the inbox, but then I noticed that not all the emails were there - some that had come through today and in the past week are not there. I have not shut down anything in Outlook or done anything else as yet, as I am hoping beyond hope that someone may be able to help me here! The sent folder has still got emails in it, as has the Old Emails folder (unfortunately the REALLY old ones) so I am really worried as I thought I had just deleted my inbox but it appears I've also made everything else I'd saved into folders disappear. Am I stuffed, or is there some way of recovering all these emails?

2009-02-19 01:54:00 | are the emails stored locally or on the email server? If it is an IMAP email server, I think they might just be moved to the trash folder. You can recover them from there? If it is a POP3 email server, it means the mail is stored locally on your computer. I'm don't use POP3 (precisely for this reason) but most certainly do NOT do a system restore. You'll lose all your system settings since the last restore point as well as all your emails indefinitely since the restore point.

2009-02-19 01:58:00 | I stupidly tried downloading some software that swore it would restore the emails but it said to shut down all programs first. I did, and when I opened Outlook it prompted me to set it up - but thankfully I closed it and now can open it normally. But the emails are still missing... | Beemer (6956) | |
2009-02-19 02:30:00 | Do you do daily back ups of all important item - Eg documents and Email - if so use the back up, all you will have lost is any mail from the last backup. | wainuitech (129) | |
2009-02-19 03:02:00 | I had a client do the same thing and in the end they accepted the fact the mail was gone and didn't require me to go any further. During my investigations I found an artical that said if you corrupt the PST file you can get back deleted files. I never did it so can't say if it works but here is the link articles.techrepublic.com.com If you try it I'd be interested to see if it works :)

2009-02-19 03:07:00 | I was sure I had set my computer to do weekly backups but when I went into the backup and restore area and tried to restore files, it said something about restore not being set up on the computer and that an administrator would have to do a backup first... and I just realised I hadn't been prompted to do a backup since setting it up. I am now doing a backup (too late for the emails probably, but at least it's a start!) and have set it to do one daily. I found something about PST files when doing a Google search but it looked quite complicated. I'll have a look, but probably wouldn't be confident enough to try it unless the instructions are pretty simple! I had cleaned out a lot of my old emails recently and filed them into different folders, but that didn't help as they all emptied as well. I did manage to recover a lot of emails, but many were really old ones that I didn't want any more and all the ones that came through today and in the past few months have disappeared. I looked and it appears relatively straightforward - but I don't know how to do the first bit. How do I open the PST file with a hex editor? Totally foreign language to me, I'm afraid!

2009-02-19 04:21:00 | Actually the Emails will still be there - windows just cant see them. You can try This here (www.diskdoctors.net). I cant vouch for it as I have never used it. To recover damaged .pst files in the past I have used Recovery Toolbox (www.recoverytoolbox.com) several times and recovered every thing. What you can try - is remove the drive, slave it to another PC - install either ( or both) of those programs as trials, scan the drive and see if it detects the deleted mails - then depending on how important the mails are - purchase the program. The trials usually go right to the point of recovery before wanting payment, so you can see if they will work or not. What ever you do DONT install programs on the actual drive the mails in - you may be over writing the very data you try to recover.

2009-02-19 04:51:00 | I'm just having a look now at that Recovery Toolbox one. Is the price in US dollars or NZ? I see it's $49.95 for a personal version. My other half has asked if there was anything there that was really important and the answer is "I don't know". Probably nothing that I can't live without, it's just annoying that all the emails that have arrived this week have disappeared as they are the most likely ones that still need attention! I did have a huge clean out recently and deleted a hundred or more from my inbox, so it is probably safe to say I can live without what I've lost, and I can get some of the senders to resend them. I must confess the husband's comment that he "deletes one thing at a time just in case" didn't help at all! I think he got the message he better leave the room before he wore the computer pretty quickly! I already know I've been an idiot, I didn't need HIM telling me as well! The right response should have been "oh honey, would you like a wine? Some chocolate?" I just ran the Recovery Toolbox demo and unfortunately it didn't recover the files I needed so I won't be bothering to buy it. There were 14 in the inbox it recovered but all were old ones, none were from this week. I could have seen who they were from and asked the senders to resend them, but these were from at least a year ago. Oh well, worth a crack! (And yes, I installed it on my portable hard drive, not the main drive.)
