748680 2009-02-17 09:54:00 My Sister in law running XP has completely filled her hard disk. She has brought a new HD and I have installed it. Now how do I go about transferring the files/data from one to the other without loosing the connection. I have used Partition Magic to do this before but is there a freeware/shareware programme just for files/data transferring? Thanks for any ideas David DavidW (532)
748681 2009-02-17 10:06:00 Just use windows explorer to copy it over

Or you can image the data drive in the old hard drive and image it to the new hard drive.
She could use Macrium Reflect for that, or DriveImageXML

748682 2009-02-17 10:18:00 blam6 If you just move something from one disk to the other using windows explorer you loose the connection. I'll have a look at your other suggestions and see if they will help D DavidW (532)
748683 2009-02-17 10:22:00 What connection are you talking about?

Why dont you connect the full hdd as a slave?

If the new one is already connected. Then you can copy from one to the other

Altho, unless you use some kind of program to back whatever up, I wouldnt copy programs that were installed, (from the full one to the new hdd) they wont run / work.

You'll have to reinstall them

Thats what I mean by the connection. She wants to shift programmes /files etc from the full HD to the empty one to free up space . This can be done easily with Partition Magic. Are there any other programmes available to do this?

748685 2009-02-17 10:33:00 Are they both connected to the machine?
If they are, then just image it over, as I mentioned above.
With DriveImageXML or MacriumReflect

748686 2009-02-17 10:41:00 The drives are c & e. The system is on c. If I image c to e do I then have an empty c drive with all the programmes still available from the desktop? DavidW (532)
748687 2009-02-17 10:52:00 You probably need an imaging program.

I wouldnt bother. Since you've reinstalled windows on the new hdd, just copy the docs across. And reinstall the programs

748688 2009-02-17 11:08:00 Thanks for your replies Not quite there yet. The old full hdd 'c' with windows on it needs some empty space to work. 'e' is almost empty. Without deleting anything I want to move things from c to e to free up space. I'm off to bed now closing down. D DavidW (532)
748689 2009-02-17 11:29:00 Then just image the whole lot with the programs I mentioned above.
Should be as simple as that:thumbs:
