560241 2007-06-17 20:57:00 No one has commented on this query I posted in the "Lets Build a PC" sticky.

I'm about to place an order (today) for 2 computers with the following specs from Ascent Tech.

One is for me the other for my wifes' friend.

I know almost nothing about selecting components for a new computer and would appreciate any comments from readers who do. I really only want to know if i've made the right choices and the main bits are the right matches for each other, not whether there are marginally cheaper or better matches.

No serious gaming is to be done, just general home computing.

Thanks

brig

Good quality components.

Terrific.

Probably no-one commented because it was in another thread. Better to start a new one like this.

Thanks pctek....I appreciate both your comments. I'm off to a "New Computer Ordering Party" this morning

560244 2007-06-18 01:33:00 Looks good to me. I would include another hard drive identical make and model. Copy files or Image the first to the second.

That is if you have data you never want to lose.

Easier than swapping in CDs/DVDs for backup.

You would have the option of a RAID setup as well.

That is if budget runs to it of course.

Probably too late now anyway.

560245 2007-06-18 02:59:00 Moving files to a second hdd in the computer is not really a backup. You need to have at least two copies of it, and one definately should be external. mejobloggs (264)
560246 2007-06-18 03:04:00 Excellent. Great choice of components. little note though, 320GB HDDs are the best buying (best value per GB) at the moment - I was able to get a seagate 320 gig sata 7200rpm and 16mb cache for under $130 after postage recently.. if you are a bargain hunter hit pricespy for those, on the other hand though ascent are really good to deal with, and i think you get a discount if you buy a 'whole pc' off them. wratterus (105)

Yes, the order has gone in and it's a relief not to be worrying over the zillions of permutations that are possible in Ascent's PC Builder!

Raid sounds interesting, but I just recently bought myself Acronis 10 True Image and if I read it correctly Raid might spoil my fun.

Anyway I have no data that is not already on disks that specially needs worrying over.

Thanks for the other comments....I really appreciate having my final specs confirmed, it's a real headache having as little experience as I do.

wratterus, I still have 100 Gb free space on my 120Gb drive . i can't imagine how I'd fill 320Gb :stare:

lol:o that's all good. obviously you don't keep music and movies or a lot of pictures on your PC.

Well of course.

If you "move" a file or files then the said move will take them off one drive and put the file or files on the other.

The word "copy" though means that you will have two copies. One copy of each file(s) on two separate hard drives either of which can contain multiple partitions which may contain various logical drives.

Well you knew that did you not?

And you can of course put the other hard drive in an enclosure which could be removed.

Get Ascent to make more than 1 partition on the drive.
Makes it easier with Acronis, so you don't have to mess about putting images on DVD or CD.
