1435837 2017-05-29 01:21:00 My friend has asked me for help in choosing a tablet device, problem being I've never owned one. So help with make and model would be appreciated, and Android or Windows? Mac is not an option. Budget isn't much of an issue, but best value for money is.

Thanks.

1435839 2017-05-29 02:57:00 Phone and text use? not the best thing to use a tablet for. The 3G/4G capable tablets tend to cost $100-$200 more than their Wi-Fi only versions for the privilege, and then there's data charges on top of that. You really pay a premium for mobility. If it's an option just tether to a smartphone and save hundreds of $$

There's a lot of personal preference involved. Windows is still better for productivity with a mouse and keyboard, Android is a lot better to use as a touch only OS and has a lot more free apps.
As to actual options, for android the Samsung Tab S2 is a really nice android tablet with a great screen, the Tab S3 just came out and is even better but costs more.

For windows the surface pro and it's clones are pretty impressive. Lenovo make a good alternative that could be mistaken for a surface at a casual glance.
Biggest issue with the surface is everything costs too much, the tablet is expensive enough but the keyboard cover casts $200 by itself last I looked and you really kind of have to have it for usability. The Dock is great but also costs around $200. You can easily spend $2k on a surface pro.

Really just Google best tablets for 2017 and read a few lists, the same few options tend to always be near the top.

I've owned a few mid priced android tablets - Asus transformer, nexus 7, a couple others I forget. They were all ok but nothing to be excited about. Then I got an Acer switch 10" windows tablet which worked ok but I don't really recommend it. 2GB of RAM is not enough for windows, a quad core atom is surprisingly capable though. Also a 32GB eMC hard drive is just too small, for windows anything under 128Gb is likely to end up feeling very restrictive. Anyway ended up with a Tab S2 and owning the flagship product really makes a difference. The screen is awesome and the thing is just so smooth and responsive. At work I have a surface pro 3 and also am fairly impressed with that.

1435840 2017-06-09 19:07:00 I think android is more user friendly. You should pick a good brand with 3 GB ram and 350+ pixel density. Where you have 3gb ram the chip set will must be strong. Erik Schepers (17542)

For around ~500, I don't think the 2017 iPad can be beaten.
Anything more than that, and I'd step up to a Surface Pro.
